Amid a rather chaotic last couple of weeks in F1, fans rejoice over the news that Drive to Survive’s season 6 will be released soon. The popular Netflix series focuses on the intricacies of the F1 world. It lifts the curtain and lets fans see the underbelly of the world they adore. The latest season of the series, as reported by ‘Tudum by Netflix,’ has ten episodes, premiering on the 23rd of February. However, the absence of Max Verstappen from the promos has become a cause for concern.

The latest installment follows the 2023 season, which turned out to be a record-breaking campaign for Max Verstappen. He aimed to improve his 2022 performance and did an unexpectedly impressive job. However, it looks like the emphasis will be on the smaller storylines this time around.

The season opener will focus on Aston Martin and their growing financial issues. Lawrence Stroll wants to do everything in his power to ensure his team’s resurgence, and cameras follow him in his pursuit. The next three episodes capture Nyck de Vries’ axing, McLaren‘s dip, and the battle between Haas and Williams, respectively. Alpine drivers take center stage in episode 5 as their rivalry reaches new heights.

Episode 6 follows Lewis Hamilton as the 7X world champion contemplates his future in F1. The following episodes see a light shine on athletes and celebs investing in Alpine while also focusing on Ferrari bringing Fred Vasseur on board. Episode 9 lays emphasis on Daniel Ricciardo coming back to a driving seat after almost a one-year break. The season finale dives deeper into the rivalry of Mercedes and Ferrari at the end of the 2023 season.

Why isn’t Max Verstappen in DTS season 6?

It is no surprise that Max Verstappen is not the focus of Drive to Survive. In an interview with TIME, he expressed his concerns over the growing marketing-centric moves by the sport’s authorities. He believes the sport is starting to lay emphasis on things that aren’t as important as racing.

Hence, he grows wary of where F1 is headed. With three F1 championships already under his belt, the Dutchman isn’t hungry for any records. Hence, if the dramatization continues, Verstappen will not stick around to experience it.

Drive to Survive had a massive impact on the sport’s viewership numbers, especially in America. With the earlier seasons detailing Verstappen’s story, the Dutchman saw a huge fanbase form in the US. However, the 26-year-old isn’t a fan of the dramatization of his story. He doesn’t want to hear his story from someone else’s perspective. Furthermore, given the series is essentially a recap of a season, Verstappen feels it is unnecessary for him to be a part of the narrative since he already knows what will happen.

Netflix has attracted a whole new fanbase to Formula 1 in the past few years. Its popular docu-series, Drive to Survive, (DTS) has been the major contributor to more fans following the sport in recent years. DTS gave people a peek into what goes on behind the scenes in team garages throughout the F1 season. This insider view coupled with the actual racing action got people hooked to the adrenaline of F1. However, besides Drive to Survive, there are several other F1 movies and documentaries.

Schumacher (2021)

Netflix produced a documentary film named ‘Schumacher’ in 2021. This is a film that has been made on the great Michael Schumacher, using archival footage and exclusive interviews. This documentary focuses on the German champion’s personal life as well as his monumental achievements in F1.

Given the seven-time champion has been unconscious for over a decade now, this documentary hits the emotional chords even harder for fans. Schumacher has been in a coma ever since his horrific skiing accident in 2013.

For fans wanting to watch the Schumacher documentary, it is exclusively available on Netflix.

Senna (2010)

Besides Michael Schumacher, if there is any other all-time beloved GOAT driver of F1, it has to be Ayrton Senna. To honor the Brazilian’s legacy, this documentary film titled ‘Senna’ was released in 2010. It covers the three-time champion’s life from 1984 until his untimely and sad death in 1994.

Senna’s tragic Imola accident and the resultant demise shocked the entire motorsport world. Given the talent of the McLaren legend, F1 fans can’t fathom what could he have achieved had he not passed away. This film, thus, again becomes much more special to give fans a glimpse of his glory over his decade-long F1 career.

According to Autosport, Senna is not available on Netflix to watch. But it is available to watch on rent on other platforms like Amazon Prime Video for $4.40 (£3.49), YouTube Movies, and Google Play for $3.14 (£2.49).

Rush (2013)

If anyone wishes to see one of the closest championship battles, Rush is the movie for them. Based on the epic 1976 season when Niki Lauda and James Hunt fought an epic title battle down to the wire, the Ron Howard-directed flick captures the true essence of F1.

Lauda and Hunt are played by Marvel Cinematic Universe actors Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth respectively. Both actors nail their roles of two strikingly opposite drivers who went toe to toe for the championship. Without spoiling anything, Rush can arguably be the perfect watch for fans to start liking the sport.

Rush is available to watch on Netflix. Besides, it is also available to watch on rent on Amazon Prime Video for $4.40 (£3.49), YouTube Movies, and Google Play for $3.14 (£2.49).

McLaren (2017)

For the history geeks, McLaren is the goldmine of F1 films. Based on the life of McLaren Racing’s founder and former F1 driver Bruce McLaren, the film takes fans on a nostalgia trip back to the 1960s and 1970s.

While McLaren has become a modern and huge brand in the present day, it had humble beginnings under Bruce McLaren. The New Zealander founded the team in the ’60s and this film focuses on his journey of his racing career.

McLaren is not available to watch on Netflix. But, on other platforms, fans can watch it on rent; on Amazon Prime Video for $4.40 (£3.49), YouTube Movies, and Google Play for $3.14 (£2.49).

Williams (2017)

In the present day, Williams Racing may be a team struggling to thrive in F1. Though, before the turn of the millennium, they dominated the sport. Williams often used to be one of the top teams besides McLaren, Ferrari, and others. The Williams documentary focuses on their heydays.

The journey of this family-owned team in F1 produces some of the most prestigious moments of history in the sport. From Frank Williams and Patrick Head pioneering the team with their innovations to its dominance with Nigel Mansell winning races and the championship in the iconic blue and yellow cars, it is a tale of inspiration.

Just like McLaren, the Williams documentary is not available to watch on Netflix. Although, fans can rent it on Amazon Prime Video for $4.40 (£3.49), YouTube Movies, and Google Play for $3.14 (£2.49).

A Life of Speed: The Juan Manuel Fangio Story (2020)

Having raced in the inaugural decade of F1 in the 1950s, Juan Manuel Fangio is one of the most prominent drivers in the sport’s history. Being a five-time champion in an era when F1 cars were quite primitive relative to today’s technical intricacies certainly makes Fangio stand out. For now, fans can only watch the documentary exclusively on Netflix.

Ferrari: Race to Immortality (2017)

‘Ferrari: Race to Immortality’, another story from the 1950s, is a movie about the famous Prancing Horse from Maranello. The movie is about Ferrari’s rise to prominence in F1, having been racing in other forms since the 1920s.

Under Enzo Ferrari, who was himself a hardcore racer, this movie goes into the roots of what made the team so prestigious in F1. Ferrari did not dominate the 1950s with championships, as it was a mixed decade of tragedy and success.

Back in the day, drivers were often at risk of losing their lives while racing in F1. There has rarely been a team in those days, who did not witness a major accident with their drivers. Despite that, Ferrari has kept racing in F1, becoming the oldest constructor in the sport.

For fans wanting to witness those early days of the Italian team in F1, they can watch this movie on rent on Amazon Prime Video for $4.40 (£3.49), YouTube Movies, and Google Play for $3.14 (£2.49). However, on Netflix, it is not available.

So far, five F1 teams have launched their liveries for the 2024 season, and almost all of them are predominantly black or have some significant black elements in them. McLaren and Williams have a decent amount of color on their liveries. However, Sauber, Alpine, and Haas have gone extreme in terms of having a black and dull livery. The reason behind the same is the fact that they feature exposed carbon fiber. While paint usually covers the same, the lack of it is bothering the fans. But why are teams shedding the paint?

F1 is all about performance and being fast on the tracks. If a car weighs more than the rest, it will inevitably be slow on the tracks in the long run. As such, shedding as much weight as possible while not hampering a car’s performance is key. This is where exposed carbon fiber comes into play for the F1 teams.

According to Mark Hughes from The Race, each full-color scheme to a car adds at least 1 kilogram (2.3 pounds) of weight, which affects performance. To put the same into numbers, a kilo of extra weight adds around 0.03 seconds to a lap time.

In a race of around 60 laps, this would translate into 1.8 seconds. This means that a car would be 1.8 seconds slower in a race only because of added weight (via paint in this scenario).

To put things into further perspective, a full paint job on a car adds around 6 kilograms (13.227 pounds). Certain teams (such as McLaren) are turning to vinyl to add color to their cars instead of paint. The material is lighter and saves crucial weight while allowing their cars to stand out from the crowd.

Drivers’ weight included, a car’s minimum weight should be 798 kgs (1759 lbs). While this has about 70 to 80 kgs of the driver (which drivers too look to optimize), under the latest regulations, teams are doing everything they can to ensure they only add weight that aids in performance. The rest only acts as a barrier for them.

What is the Carbon Fiber material that F1 teams use?

For decades, the teams in F1 have built their cars almost entirely of a material called carbon fiber. It is the exposed black part of a car that teams are now in favor of showing off rather than covering it with paint.

The primary reason behind the use of this material is its strength-to-weight ratio. While most other materials that provide good strength to cars are very heavy, carbon fiber is amongst the lightest and strongest materials for the job.

Furthermore, it acts as an excellent safety material for the drivers, owing to its tensile strength. Teams require multiple layers of CF on each part to ensure maximum durability.

They vacuum layers together before putting the parts into a pressure cooker to complete the manufacturing process. McLaren introduced the material in F1 when they first started using carbon fiber back in the 1980s.

Ahead of the 2024 season, a lot of eyes are already on Alex Albon. There are rumors of bigger teams wanting to sign him. Albon is currently contracted to Williams until 2025 and will be eager to lead the team to success in these years. However, team principal James Vowles feels that Albon won’t really be able to do too much with the mechanical package the team currently has at their disposal.

Williams appointed Vowles as their boss in 2023 and made big strides. They were in the top 10 in several races, contrary to their ‘perennial backmarkers’ status. They secured 28 points by the end of 2023, which allowed them to finish a respectable P7 in the standings.

Now, Vowles aims to take the team even higher, as reported by AMuS. He has a target in mind, and that is to compete with Alpine, a team stuck in the midfield. But with Mercedes and Red Bull reportedly interested in their star driver Albon, will the midfield be enough to convince him to stay? Vowles clears these expectations out.

“We are not yet good enough to make the next leap within a year. [Alpine] they were only one position ahead of us in the team rankings, but the point gap was quite large. If we were to finish ahead of them, that would be “That’s a huge step.”

Vowles’ comments are a clear indication that Albon cannot think of competing with the top guns at the moment. Alpine, a team Vowles aims to beat, competes for ‘rare podiums’ on the odd occasions. So it’s safe to say, that is where Albon’s expectations have to lie ahead of the 2024 season.

James Vowles has his say on Alex Albon’s future

Following the shocking news that Lewis Hamilton is about to move to Ferrari in 2025, F1 fans are convinced that anything can happen in the silly season. Hence, no one rules out Alex Albon moving to one of the bigger teams. His team principal, Vowles, however, thinks that the Thai-British driver will honor his contract.

During the Williams launch, Vowles made it clear that Albon has a contract until the 2025 season. Unlike Hamilton, who didn’t honor the two-year deal he signed with Mercedes last year, Vowles expects Albon to stay put.

The majority of the F1 community, however, seems to think that Albon’s mind could change if a race-winning team approaches him. As Karun Chandhok pointed out on his X account,

“Hmm. I suppose the lesson from the last week with Lewis and Ferrari is that contract length is one thing, option clauses for exits are another.”

Regardless of where his future lies, Albon will be focused on having a great season ahead and having a bigger points haul than 2023 for both himself and Williams.

Alex Albon‘s outstanding performance played a pivotal role in Williams securing seventh place in the 2023 constructors’ championship. Subsequently, his impressive skills have garnered attention from elite teams. Albon was first linked to Ferrari, more recently, he was mentioned as Hamilton’s 2025 replacement. There were also reports of him getting a Red Bull deal. However, putting an end to all speculations, the Thai driver has now pledged his commitment to Williams.

Following Lewis Hamilton’s surprising move to Ferrari in 2025, Toto Wolff began searching for a new teammate for George Russell. Speculation arose regarding Alex Albon potentially filling the position, especially considering his contract was set to expire in 2024. However, in a recent interview with Sky Sports, Albon opted to set aside these discussions.

He said, “Truthfully, the focus really isn’t there at the moment. That’s more for behind-the-scenes work. I’m focused on Williams and the positive spiral that we’re on and trying to do the best job I can.”

Albon acknowledges that the interest from major teams is solely based on his on-track performance. However, despite the attention, he wishes to enhance his performance to ensure that these opportunities materialize in the future.

To put it simply, Albon’s top priority at Williams is to perform well before thinking about potentially moving to another team. Yet, even if the 27-year-old desired to depart, it appears that James Vowles is not in the mood to allow him to leave shortly.

How James Vowles explained Alex Albon’s actual contract

Before the unveiling of Williams’ livery, there was speculation surrounding Alex Albon’s contract status. Many fans were under the impression that the Thai driver was only signed with the team until 2024.

This led to speculation that Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari could potentially position the 27-year-old as a candidate for Mercedes. However, Williams F1 boss James Vowles clarified that Albon’s contract actually extends with the team through the 2025 season.

He said, Alex has signed with Williams until the end of 2025, that’s signed. It’s not something I’ve been very public about, because I don’t feel the need to.”

Vowles further emphasized how the team is working together to create an environment that is appropriate for a driver of Albon’s quality. He emphasized that the success of the Williams squad is his top priority.

The former Mercedes engineer reaffirmed that his duty is to the team as a whole, rather than any individual driver. Therefore, in Vowles’ view, any decision regarding Albon’s potential departure will be carefully considered in light of the team’s long-term aspirations.

Certainly, no team principal would willingly let go of a potential talent like Albon, especially considering he alone secured 27 out of the 28 points for the team. Albon’s consistent performance was evident even when the Williams F1 car was struggling for pace.

Williams team principal, James Vowles has often said how outdated the technology and infrastructure is at the iconic British team. Certainly a minnow of the sport now, Vowles compared the team’s 2024 equipment to be out of the “Ming Dynasty” when he chanced upon a humongous machine that as Autosport reported should’ve only been the size of a table. Despite the Briton’s admission of the team living in the past, their star driver, Alex Albon has come out with a reassuring suggestion that they have broken their shackles and made a few bold decisions to prosper in 2024 and beyond.

Soymotor.com quoted the British-Thai driver as saying,

“I think in the last four or five years there has been a clear way in which the car has been designed and this season there is a quite big divergence. We have taken some risks to move away from our old habits. What we are doing is the right thing to do and we will have to see if it works.”

2023 was a relatively successful year for the team who had made a habit of finishing last in the Constructors’ championship. On the back of Albon’s strong performances, the team clinched a respectable 7th in the standings last year. Naturally, in 2024, the team would be expecting to climb up the midfield ladder and establish themselves as regular points scorers.

In a build-up to 2024, Williams stopped developing the FW45 to focus on its 2024 challenger. With Albon’s admission, it would appear that the team have decided to aggressively push for development with that added $9,000,000 push they received last year. 2024 is an important year for the team, not only from the perspective of performance but also in a bid to retain their main man, Alex Albon.

F1’s silly season might sway Alex Albon away from Williams

Albon has proven himself to be one of the most in form drivers on the grid at the moment and Vowles knows this. While the team can retain the services of the 27-year-old if they manage to jump the likes of Alpine and Aston Martin in the Constructors’ next year, Auto Motor und Sport reports that Vowles is pessimistic.

With Lewis Hamilton’s blockbuster move for Ferrari already set to launch in 2025, the 2024 silly season has suddenly loomed large on the entire sport. 12 driver contracts, including Albon’s are coming to an end at the end of the year and the Grove-based team need to act quick if they want to retain their man.

Potential race seats can now open at Red Bull, Mercedes and elsewhere after Hamilton’s seismic announcement. Peter Windsor has already suggested that Albon has been offered a 3-year deal by Red Bull for 2025 and beyond. On the other hand, Toto Wolff might be very keen to induct the #23 driver into the Silver Arrows’ ranks to partner George Russell in 2025.

Albon himself would not be wanting to dwindle in the lower rungs of the grid for too long. After proving himself to be a solid candidate for one of the top 3 teams, his own ambitions might spell the end of his alliance with Williams beyond 2024.

Williams officially kicked off their 2024 season by revealing the livery they will be running on the FW46 this year. That being said, despite the sleek blue design swaying quite a few heads at the launch event, the unveiling of a primary sponsor left many scratching their heads. The team’s colors bore the name ‘Komatsu‘ prominently. Many confused it with Hass’ latest team principal Ayao Komatsu and thought that the Japanese engineer was somehow sponsoring the team.

As it turns out, the Komatsu sponsorship has nothing to do with Haas’ boss. In a press release by the team, they revealed that they had signed a multi-year deal with Komatsu, a prominent construction and mining company.

This would be the second time the two have joined forces in Formula 1. Komatsu delivered gearbox components to the team back in the 90s, at the peak of Williams’ dominance in the sport. Their partnership culminated in the team securing the 1996 and 1997 championships, for Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, respectively.

Formula 1 twitter sprung into action, however. Be that as it may, it was actually Haas that stole the show with their hilarious tweet. The team tweeted, “Why is our team principal on your side pods?”

The FW46’s unveiling in New York was a grand affair. The optimism for the team was palpably high, with James Vowles, their team principal, and Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant charting their ambitions for the season to come.

Williams bank of 2023 momentum for 2024 success

In 2023, Williams finished a respectable 7th in the Constructors’ championship, which gave them hope for the future. Once a top team, Williams found it difficult to even finish in the points in the recent past. However, the team now want to set their sights further up the grid.

Vowles was quoted by Autosport as saying,

“As we look to build on the momentum from last season, we have a driver line-up in Alex and Logan that is capable of consistently fighting for points while helping lead our development for the future.”

A significant jump in the standings would be a far-fetched aspiration for the team. However, given how their car had been developed over the course of last season, the team can expect to solidify their position in the midfield with some constant battles for points in 2024.

How Williams will fare against the competition will also dictate their capabilities to retain Alex Albon. With the driver market ready to blow up for 2025, Albon would be eager to drive at the front of the grid if Williams fail to show constant improvement this year.

Alex Albon made an appearance on The Fast and The Curious podcast back in August, before the Italian Grand Prix. Talking about his 2023 season until then, the British-Thai driver was informed by the host that he was actually ‘Christian’s’ favorite driver in 2023, after Max Verstappen. Naturally, flattered to be receiving such praise from his ex-boss, Christian Horner, Albon went on to explain that the Briton was actually very supportive and he was glad that he said that about him. As it turns out, though, Horner wasn’t the ‘Christian’ in question!

The Williams driver was evidently very happy thinking that Horner thought that high of his 2023 efforts. However, in a hilarious turn of events, the host revealed that she was actually talking about her co-host, on the podcast, Christian Hewgill!

And when Hewgill joked that his praise obviously doesn’t mean as much as Horner’s, Albon hilariously replied, “Your words mean more to me than Christian Horner’s! My confidence coming into this weekend is higher than it has ever been before.”

Joking aside, Albon does deserve credit, though. 2023 was a stellar year for the #23 driver behind the wheel of the FW45. He scored a handy haul of 27 points for the team, compared to Logan Sargeant’s one. Moreover, after finishing 10th in the Constructors’ last year, Williams’ P7 was all thanks to Albon.

Albon was the real team leader within the Grove-based squad. While Sargeant found it difficult to adjust to life in F1, in his rookie season, the relatively experienced 27-year-old carried the entire team to a lofty finish.

Alex Albon may become a highly sought-after driver in 2024

Alex Albon outperformed the capabilities of the FW45 as he scored several valuable points for Williams in 2023. A testament to how good Albon was can be received by how difficult Sargeant found it to cope with the car. The American driver struggled for pace throughout the season and suffered a few hefty crashes, too.

In the end, the 27 points that Albon scored for the team made all the difference in their Constructors’ Championship finish at the end of the season. After the mighty disappointment of finishing last in 2022, seventh in the standings would’ve been a welcome relief for the iconic British team.

In all honesty, Christian Horner was impressed by Albon’s performances in 2023. It had been reported by revered F1 journalist, Yhacbec López, that Red Bull had offered Albon a return to the Red Bull family with a seat for 2024 with V-CARB (formerly AlphaTauri). However, Albon reportedly turned them down with a “No, thank you.”

That being said, Albon goes into 2024 in the last year of his Williams contract. If he can repeat his 2023 performances, he will most likely be a wanted man in the F1 paddock for 2025 and beyond.

After switching jobs from the upper echelons of the F1 grid to the very opposite side of the rung James Vowles has admitted that he ‘sacrificed‘ the comforts of a team like the Mercedes to join Williams despite becoming team principal of the latter. However, the Briton has also committed himself to steer the team back to the top of F1, with the passage of time.

While talking about ditching the comforts of Mercedes and an exceptional talent pool that won eight consecutive titles, Vowles explained the reasons for his departure to Williams. He said as per Speedcafe,

“The reason why I did is I believe in the vision that we have going forward.”

Vowles did qualify that statement by suggesting that work still needs to be done, and no one should expect the iconic British team to be an overnight ‘rags to riches’ story.

After a recent inflow of investment, some where around the ballpark of $20,000,000 one would expect Vowles to be ecstatic. But while he is grateful and optimistic, he knows that the fiscal demands of modern Grand Prix racing mean that they are still miles behind.

According to him, the biggest capital expenditure the team is going to incur is in terms of setting up some crucial facilities. This may be a work to be done over the course of the next few seasons. Be that as it may, ever since the arrival of Vowles last year, the team have already shown some tremendous signs of progress.

How James Vowles elevated Williams in 2023

The start to the 2023 season was a tough and bleak affair for the Grove-based team. In the first five races of the season, the team could only muster up a solitary point, thanks to Alex Albon‘s drive at the season opener in Bahrain.

Since then, however, the team started working on developing the FW45 and it worked wonders. Every upgrade package complemented the low-drag profile of the car, and the Williams was often a rocket-ship in the straight line.

As a result, under Vowles’ stewardship, the team scored a handy 28 points to finish P7 in the Constructors’ championship. It was their best finish yet, since the 2017 season. Naturally, any way they look at it, from the brink of bankruptcy to a handsome Constructors’ payout, the team has already started turning their fortunes around.

The team looks really strong with Vowles on the pitwall and Alex Albon behind the wheel. Additionally, they would also want Albon’s teammate Logan Sargeant to fire on all cylinders after what was a difficult rookie season for the American.

The 2021 Belgian GP was infamous for several reasons and the weather contributed to the majority of incidents. Rain affected the entire weekend, and in qualifying, visibility was horrible. Regardless, the session went ahead uninterrupted, until Lando Norris suffered a horrific crash on Eau Rouge. This scared the majority of the F1 grid, including George Russel,l but the Briton interestingly took something valuable out of it that led to his first-ever podium finish with Williams.

Norris‘ crash brought out the red flag, and drivers were sitting in their cars for over 30 minutes, waiting for the marshals to clear the debris out. Russell took this time to watch Norris’ replay. In an interview later (posted on YouTube by FormuleFans), he said,

“I started watching Lando’s videos. And I saw Lando has done a slightly different line at turn 1. He was going tight at turn 1 and one of the only drivers to do that.”

Russell revealed that when the session restarted, he did exactly what Norris did and got a purple sector one showing he was faster than anyone else at that part of the circuit. To everyone’s surprise, he guided his Williams car to a P2 finish in qualifying behind Max Verstappen that afternoon.

To make things even better for Russell, he ended up on the podium the very next day, but it was under very controversial circumstances.

How George Russell got his first-ever podium without racing?

On Sunday, fans were worried about the weather at Spa-Francorchamps playing a role in the race’s outcome. But what unfolded remains one of the most bizarre outings in F1 history. Fans were glued to their television screens for hours but saw only two laps of racing action – both behind the safety car.

As a result, no driver could overtake. They ended the race just as they started. Max Verstappen got the win and his title rival Lewis Hamilton came P3. However, all eyes were on George Russell who got a podium for Williams, a team that has been an established backmarker in the recent past.

Had the race taken place under normal circumstances, it is very likely that Russell would have fallen down the pecking order. This was his first-ever podium in F1 and would turn out to be his only with Williams. In 2022, the British driver switched to Mercedes in a long-awaited move and is being labeled as a future world champion.
