The 73rd NBA All-Star Game is underway as fans and celebrities pack the arena to witness some of the biggest stars in the league go head-to-head against one another. Multiple players will be making their first All-Star appearance while LeBron James will be making his 20th consecutive appearance in the All-Star game this year. Before tipoff, LBJ sat down with the Inside the NBA crew, giving Shaquille O’Neal the perfect moment to flex his resume on national television.

LeBron James made history when he got selected for his 20th straight All-Star Game appearance, surpassing the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in yet another category. But before the game, James took a moment to sit down with the guys from the NBA on TNT crew to discuss his All-Star game MVPs.

While talking to the Inside the NBA guys, Ernie Johnson pointed out how LeBron James is tied with Shaquille O’Neal, Oscar Robertson, and Michael Jordan for having three All-Star Game MVPs under their belt. Ernie ended up asking James about potentially winning the All-Star Game MVP for the fourth time, joining Kobe Bryant and Bob Petit in that category. And a humble King did not seem that motivated to chase that accomplishment.

“You are tied with this guy (Shaquille O’Neal) and with MJ(Michael Jordan) and Oscar(Robertson)—three MVPs at the All-Star Game. Kobe(Bryant), Bob Petit have four. How much would you like to be an MVP for the fourth time?”

“Listen, I could stay at three. If I get four, cool. But at the end of the day, I’m in great company no matter where I’m at. So it doesn’t even matter.”

James asked Shaquille O’Neal about his three All-Star Game MVPs. This automatically gave The Big Aristotle something to rub in the faces of his co-hosts, Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith and Charles Barkley when he said, “Anybody else at this table got three?”

As Charles Barkley tried to make his case for the one All-Star MVP he won in 1991, O’Neal did not hesitate in trolling him on national television, calling him a ‘bum.’ Whereas, all this while, Kenny Smith could only bring up winning three MVPs during his high school days.

But the Los Angeles Lakers legend wasn’t done gloating as he capped it off by saying, “Hey kids, I got the same MVPs as Bron Bron.”

It would be an interesting turn of events if LeBron James ends up winning his fourth NBA All-Star Game MVP, surpassing Shaquille O’Neal only hours after his statement. However, given how far behind the West is at the time of writing, and with not a single player showing any interest in even wanting to be in the same room as a basketball at the moment, that does seem beyond unlikely.

Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James’s All-Star Game MVPs

Let’s dive into the years both Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James were crowned with the MVP honors after their All-Star Game performances. Shaquille O’Neal’s first All-Star Game MVP came in 2000 but he was crowned the MVP as a joint winner for the third time in NBA history.

Shaq had to share his first All-Star Game MVP with San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan as joint winners. His second MVP came in 2004 and the last one was another joint win alongside Kobe Bryant in 2009. Shaq became the first player in All-Star Game history to win two joint MVPs and also the first player to win the award with multiple teams.

As for LeBron James, the King won his first All-Star Game MVP back in 2006. He followed up on his ASG MVP award again in 2008. It seemed like LBJ took a decade-long snooze as his third MVP award came 10 years later in 2018. So, let’s see if LeBron James does end up making history tonight again by winning his fourth All-Star Game MVP award.

The two-decade-long NBA journey of Kobe Bryant has produced uncountable tales of human resilience and determination. One such instance occurred in his final season as the Los Angeles Lakers icon dislocated his finger during a play against the San Antonio Spurs.

While trailing at home, the Black Mamba attempted to chase down the ball with two minutes left to play. The shooting guard slipped in the process before accidentally dislocating his right middle finger. Despite the seemingly painful injury, the 5x champion stayed composed as he walked toward the trainer Gary Vitti while holding the injured finger.

After a short yet precise conversation, Vitti comprehended the causation before initiating the treatment. The 67-year-old allegedly performed a reduction procedure to realign the injured finger of the 18x All-Star. Through this, the athletic trainer manipulated the dislocated area back to its original position. Right after that, the 2008 MVP re-entered the court before sharing a laugh about it with Tim Duncan.

In the post-match conference, the 2x Finals MVP reflected on the instance, stating, “Tried to go after the ball. Just slipped on the wet floor. As I slipped, put my hand down trying to balance myself. So my finger just jammed right into the floor and just popped right out”. “It hurt but I have been through worse pain,” he later added while shedding light on the extent of the injury.

His toughness failed to pay the dividends as the hosts lost 119-113 despite the best efforts of the Lakers talisman. Yet, his 25 points, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds kept the franchise in the fight defying all the odds. It showcased his grit as a competitor, propelling his status as a basketball icon. That kind of grit is beyond rare, not just today, but in the history of the NBA.

A closer look at the injury of Kobe Bryant

Nearly half a decade after the incident, Vitti shared his viewpoint on the injury in an episode of FAIR GAME. “If you could see my face, I really had to put a lot of traction on that bone to get it back in place,” he revealed.“When you see Kobe writhing in pain, you know it hurts. I put it in and as soon as I did, you could just see that his pain went away. Anybody else would have still been in pain,” the trainer added.

It displayed the seriousness of the injury despite Bryant downplaying it after the conclusion of the clash. His reaction might have sparked from the series of several moments he faced throughout his playing days. During one such instance, he infamously shot the ball with his left hand after playing through a right rotator cuff injury against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Tales such as these have set the benchmark for his contemporaries and the aspirants over the years. His ability to instantly bounce back at all times continues to serve as an exemplary moment in the NBA. Due to this, his endeavors have become larger than life as it transcended the realm of competitive sports.

The excellence of Stephen Curry earned the Golden State Warriors their first win of the season series against the Phoenix Suns. His game-deciding three-pointer in front of the home crowd simultaneously extended their winning streak to four. Soon after the conclusion of the game, the team’s head coach Steve Kerr showered immense praise for the point guard through an ‘elite’ comparison.

The outcome came down to the final Warriors possession as the 4x champion deceived Kevin Durant to receive the ball. After collecting the pass from outside the arc, the 35-year-old turned around to attempt a 29-feet three-pointer in a singular motion. Despite being contested by the Suns’ guards, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker, the Akron-born scored from the deep to hand the hosts a 113-112 win. With only 0.7 seconds left to play, the brilliance eventually resulted in a triumph as the Warriors improved their win percentage to 50%.

After the conclusion of the clash, Kerr reflected on the 10x All-Star’s greatness before putting him in the same bracket as the all-time greats. Likening the Warriors guard with Hall of Famers such as Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan, the 58-year-old stated,

“Jordan, Duncan, Steph. Just get the ball to those guys, you’re going to win a lot”.

The high praise remained justified as the memorable instance separated the 2022 Finals MVP from his contemporaries. It was the Splash Brother’s 10th game-winning field goal in the final five seconds of the fourth quarter and overtime. The unthinkable stat line puts him in a league of his own as he tops the chart in this regard.

Thus, the tribute from the 9x championship-winning persona contained an immense amount of respect for Curry. Not only him but the entire NBA world joined in soon after to celebrate the rarity of the occasion.

How did the NBA react to the game-winner from Stephen Curry?

In the post-match interview, Gary Payton II showcased faith in the franchise’s talisman, stating, “We got Stephen Curry. Never worry”. Brandin Podziemski who threw the final pass the the 6ft 2″ star also displayed a relaxed demeanor upon reflecting on the game scenario. “I was only throwing the ball to him and let him do what he does,” the Warriors rookie mentioned.

Alongside the Warriors members, Kevin Durant, the former teammate of Curry, seemingly expressed his disbelief. During the final timeout of the match, the 2x champion looked at the display within the arena to revisit the moment. The Slim Reaper watched the instance with a smile on his face as he evidently accepted the impending defeat.

The night therefore paved the way for an unforgettable moment for the Dubs nation. Amidst the ongoing struggles, their recent run of form has instilled faith in the hearts of the Bay Area residents. So, it would be interesting to witness where they stand right before the postseason.

Being an All-Star is the biggest nod that a basketball player can get during an ongoing/ regular season. The All-Star game is reserved for the best of the best, with teams often only managing to send a single player to the game.

But in rare cases, NBA rookies manage to even make it into the prestigious game. Though the NBA All-Stars are voted in, managing to do so as a rookie is still impressive. The last time this rare incident happened was back in 2011 when Blake Griffin made the game as a reserve.

As the league has gotten more and more competitive, the bar for entry into the All-Star game has only gone up. Looking back, among all the rookie All-Stars, these five iconic players stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Jerry West

Mr. Logo himself is the first pick, as he made the 1961 All-Star game with the Minneapolis Lakers. West averaged 17.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 79 games.

West was an integral part of the Laker’s success that season, as he was already the second scoring option on the team after Elgin Baylor. The Lakers would eventually fall to St.Louis.

Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson is one of the greatest players to ever wear the Purple and Gold. Johnson may have been the greatest rookie ever, as he won a Championship with the Lakers in his rookie year. Alongside Kareem Abdul Jabbar, a young Magic averaged 18 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists, while playing 77 games that season.

Not only was Magic voted into the All-Star game, but became one of the youngest players to become an All-Star starter back in the ’70s. Magic and his college/NBA rival Larry Bird would battle it out for the coming years, retiring with five championships in the process.

Hakeem Olajuwon

Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon may be the best overseas basketball player the sport has ever seen. Olajuwon, who was selected 1st overall in the 1984 NBA draft, was picked by the Houston Rockets, where he would go on to win 2 championships for the franchise.

Olajuwon would play well in his first season, averaging 20.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks in 82 appearances. He would instantly become the second option behind Ralph Sampson, before completely taking over as the primary scorer and rebounder for the team.

Hakeem, the first non-American player to make the All-Star game, missed out on his Rookie Of The Year to Michael Jordan.

Shaquille O’Neal

Shaquille O’Neal is possibly the most dominant player the league has ever seen. O’Neal was a force to deal with from the get, as he would win Rookie Of The Year (1992) and also appeared in the All-Star game that year.

During his rookie season, Shaq averaged 23.4 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in 81 appearances. These numbers are elite regardless, but unfortunately for the Magic, O’Neal couldn’t drag the franchise to the playoffs.

That being said, Shaq might just be one of the greatest Magic players ever, even though he only spent 4 years with the team, also having his jersey retired by Orlando.

Tim Duncan

The San Antonio Spurs dominated in an era where multiple super teams came and went. But without Tim Duncan, none of the five championships would ever be possible for the Spurs.

Duncan went first overall in the 1997 draft, becoming an instant impact from the get-go. The Big Fundamental looked NBA-ready even as a rookie, averaging 21.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while playing 82 games.

This performance from Duncan led to him making his first All-Star game, while also taking home Rookie Of The Year honors. The Spurs would go on to win their first Championship with Duncan at its helm just a year after.

San Antonio Spurs icon David Robinson has an affinity for watches and is an avid collector of them. However, his most cherished timepiece, a Piaget Upstream Chronograph, wasn’t one he bought. Instead, it was gifted to him by his teammate and the heir to his throne, Tim Duncan.

In an episode of Talking Watches for HODINKEE’s YouTube page, Robinson revealed the backstory of receiving the Piaget watch from Duncan. He said:

“My teammates have always known about my love for watches. And when I was playing and I won MVP, I gave everyone on my team a watch. It was a Bertolucci at the time. I thought that they were a lot of fun, stainless steel, Bertolucci, beautiful watches. Just to kind of tune them into what this world of watches was all about. And when I retired, Tim Duncan gave me this watch.”

Robinson spoke about the uniqueness of the watch and showed the back of the watch, which is engraved with a tribute from Duncan that read, “To 50, teammate, mentor, friend.” Robinson explained he typically doesn’t wear watches with small faces, but this piece held a special place in his heart and will never leave his collection.

Robinson’s incredible watch collection is worth close to $955,000. However, the watch on the lower end of the price spectrum in his collection is the one he cherishes most. This is a testament to just how fond Robinson is of Duncan. He understood that while his teammate was never into watches, his gift of one came from the heart. It is no wonder that he cherishes the timepiece so much.

David Robinson reveals the truth about Tim Duncan’s personality

Tim Duncan was a systematic, unselfish, yet destructive force on the basketball court. However, he was always reserved and had a quiet personality and kept himself safeguarded from the public scrutiny that is a part of being an NBA superstar. Many assumed the San Antonio Spurs icon had a “boring” personality. However, in an interview with News 4 San Antonio, David Robinson pulled back the curtain on his teammate.

Robinson and his son, Corey, discussed the NBA Hall of Fame Class of 2020, headlined by Duncan, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Garnett. Speaking of his former teammate, Robinson said:

“Tim is the coolest customer. He reminds me of the old ‘Cheetos’ cat who used to be on their ads. He’s just so cool.”

Not many will use “cool” to describe Duncan, but Robinson has spent more time with the Hall of Famer than most. His testimony holds weight.

Robinson and Duncan are great friends off the court, and on it, they were among the most devastating duos in NBA history. Called the “Twin Towers,” the two MVPs were hard for opposition teams to contain. In Duncan’s second season, the duo led the Spurs to their first NBA title. After the Los Angeles Lakers won three straight titles, Duncan and Robinson broke the monopoly and won their second title together in 2003. Robinson retired at the end of the 2003 season, while Duncan carried on another 13 seasons and added three more NBA titles to his resume.

In the recent episode of the Gil’s Arena Showformer Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings player Rashad McCants came up with a hot take. He suggested replacing Magic Johnson with Tim Duncan from the list of Top 5 players. Gilbert Arenas was not having it with this take and seemed extremely baffled. Indeed, undermining the arguably greatest point guard in the league’s history with such a statement would have any fan of the league astounded.

While talking about Victor Wembanyama’s potential to become the greatest Spurs legend, the crew discussed Tim Duncan being an underrated superstar despite being a 3x Finals MVP and winning five NBA championships. When Arenas asked McCants who he would remove from the Top 5 list of NBA legends to include Tim Duncan, the former Timberwolves player unhesitantly answered,

“We don’t need Magic.”

Arena’s list of Top 5 players included LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, and Shaquille O’Neal. Adding Duncan to his list, McCants said, “You said Kobe, LeBron, Mike, Timmy (Tim Duncan), Shaq. We don’t need Magic…We don’t need him in the top five!” This take can baffle many NBA fans, including 3x All-Star Gilbert Arenas, who couldn’t believe what he was hearing. However, McCants had an explanation for the same.

McCants believes Duncan’s greatness in the league’s history exceeds that of Magic Johnson. Reasoning his take, McCants added, “I feel Tim Duncan’s resume is better than Magic’s. I feel like the skill set, resume, what he has done, I’d put Magic at six.”

Note that Johnson is also a 5x NBA champion and a 3x Finals MVP, similar to Duncan. However, the Showtime Lakers legend has one more league MVP title than Tim Duncan, a 2x MVP winner. Despite Johnson setting the precedent for fast-break basketball plays, McCants said he does not like seeing him in the top five list. Though Johnson had stats to rest his case, McCants still would not accept that to give the Showtime legend his due flowers.

McCants agreed to put Johnson in the Top 5 only if LeBron James never existed in the league. The panel, including Gilbert Arenas, was baffled hearing the ‘absurd’ reasonings and explanations McCants gave. With this episode, McCants definitely started a new debate for the fans to engage in. While we cannot change Rashad’s views on Magic, perhaps most of the fans would disagree with his take and definitely keep Johnson high up in their Top 5 list.

Is Tim Duncan’s resume better than Magic Johnson’s?

Tim Duncan and Magic Johnson have somewhat similar resumes from their playing careers in the NBA. Both players are legends for their respective franchises, having won five NBA championships and three Finals MVP. However, there are several categories where both the players edge over each other in their respective playing careers.

Duncan edges Johnson with more All-NBA First Team selections (10), All-NBA Team selections (15), All-Defensive Team selections (15), All-Star appearances (15), and a Rookie of the Year title. However, Johnson is ahead of Duncan with more Season MVP titles (3), assists leader titles (4), and stats leader titles (2).

Furthermore, if we were to count their averages, Tim Duncan’s 19 PPG is slightly below Magic Johnson’s 19.5 points per game. Johnson is also ahead of Duncan in assists and steals, having 11.2 APG and 1.9 steals per game compared to Duncan’s 3.0 APG and 0.7 steals per game.

Both the players have an equal amount of stats to rest their case to belong in the top 5 list. However, as evident as it may seem, Magic Johnson’s achievements in 13 seasons compared to Tim Duncan’s in 18 seasons clearly make Johnson a definite contender to remain a Top 5 basketball player of all time.

The Golden State Warriors’ current form is a matter of concern for Dubs fans. Aside from their poor ranking in the Western Conference table, their star veteran, Stephen Curry, also seems to be suffering from a slump for the past few games. Fans are worried about this concerning dip in Curry’s form, which has led to a Redditor unearthing a startling detail about the 2x MVP’s performance in the last ten games for the Warriors.

A post titled “Stephen Curry is now combined -31 in his last 10 games” on the r/NBA subreddit highlighted Curry’s poor splits in the past few games, which is just 42/37/93 with an average of 24 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds in the last ten games. In the 29 games that Curry has played this season, he has a plus-minus rating of -38, with an average of 27.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.

Steph Curry is now a combined -31 in his last 10 games
byu/spiattalo innba

This stat could be slightly worrying for both Warriors fans and Curry, given the Dubs superstar has almost always maintained a positive plus-minus rating since his third season in the league. It was only in the 2009-10, 2010-11, and 2019-20 seasons in his career, that Steph has had a negative plus-minus rating. Till this point in his career, Curry has averaged a +/- rating of 376.7, which roughly translates to a total of +5651 in his 15 seasons playing in the league.

It seems like the Warriors have as a whole taken a step back in maintaining their players’ +/- rating for this season. On the Warriors roster, Brandin Podziemski and Chris Paul currently have the highest +/- rating, +107 and +97 respectively. On the other hand, Andrew Wiggins has the worst rating of them all, with -98 for this season.

Why does a plus-minus rating matter?

Plus/Minus ratings or PM may seem like a useless advanced stat to many fans. However, it reflects how a team performed while one of their players is on the court. A positive PM rating for a player suggests that the team outscored their opponents while the player was on the court. However, if a player has a negative PM stat, let’s say -30. That would mean that the opposing team outscored the player’s team by 30 points while the player was on the court.

Therefore, Plus/Minus ratings greatly help assess a player’s impact on their teams’ performance. One of the greatest examples of the stat’s effectiveness would be Tim Duncan, who had always maintained a winning record with the San Antonio Spurs during his playing career. This is also one of the reasons why Duncan carries the record of highest career plus-minus in the league’s history.

While Stephen Curry might be facing a slump at this point, that does not mean that he is far behind in his career plus-minus from Duncan. Curry ranks sixth in the league’s highest PM stats, with a PM rating of +5651. Furthermore, in terms of 100+ games played, Curry ranks fourth in highest +/-, with a 6.2 rating.

Both players have 2x NBA MVP awards and the Finals MVP award to their name and have often been pitted against each other in the debate about the best player in the league. However, Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t believe the two can be compared. When asked on The Big Podcast which of the two players is higher on his all-time rankings, the Hall of Famer refused to answer, citing they both play different positions.

With Antetokounmpo dominating as a forward and Jokic reinventing the game as a center, O’Neal picked an apt comparison to explain the situation, saying:

“You have the new Shaq versus Tim [Duncan] conversation. You cannot compare the two. Don’t ever compare me to a power forward.”

Shaq makes a valid point with the comparison as when he and Tim Duncan were leading the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, respectively, in the early 2000s, the two were compared despite the sizeable difference in their playing style. Probably, both players heavily dominating both sides of the court gave birth to the comparisons.

The comparison, however, was not completely valid as the Lakers’ identity was built around O’Neal’s offensive prowess, ensuring their superstar center was in the best position to dominate. On the other hand, Duncan was a vital cog in Greg Popovich‘s system, which relied on players being unselfish and sharing the ball. The only similarity between the two was the success they enjoyed. In the nine NBA Finals between 1999 and 2007, one of the two competed in each championship series. O’Neal made it five times, while Duncan participated in four.

They both retired with an enviable trophy haul. Shaquille O’Neal won the NBA MVP, 3x Finals MVP, and 4x NBA championship. Duncan won the NBA MVP award twice, the Finals MVP thrice, and the NBA title five times.

Giannis Antetokounmpo vs. Nikola Jokic: How have they fared head-to-head?

Like O’Neal and Duncan, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic are polar opposites in terms of playing style and the roles they play for their respective teams. While the Bucks superstar dominates in the paint on both ends as the defensive anchor and the primary scoring option, the Nuggets’ center is the team’s de facto point guard, facilitating his teammates and creating space from the perimeter with his shooting prowess.

Despite the differences, when the two superstars go head-to-head, it’s a must-watch event. They have faced off only 13 times in the NBA, and Jokic and the Nuggets lead the head-to-head series 9-4. The Nuggets superstar has averaged 22.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 8.6 assists against Antetokounmpo, while the Bucks superstar has lodged 24 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 5 assists, on average against his counterpart.

Jokic’s best performance against Antetokounmpo and the Nuggets came during the 2020-21 season. The Nuggets superstar scored 37 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished 11 assists in a 128-97 blowout win for Denver in Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo’s best outing against the Nuggets was in March 2018. He recorded a 36-point triple-double in a 134-123 loss.

Jokic has dominated Antetokoumpo head-to-head, but they are on an equal footing as far as their accomplishments are concerned. Perhaps one of the two can take the edge in the head-t0-head debate by leading their team to a second NBA title. Maybe we’ll see the two face off in the 2024 NBA Finals.

France’s basketball icon Tony Parker recently sat with his nation’s soccer legend Zinedine Zidane in the latest episode of the SKWEEK, where the two legends discussed on plethora of topics. As both the stars have shared locker rooms with some of the most unique and talented players in their careers, they also talked about a few of them.

Zidane identified Brazil’s national football team’s center forward, Ronaldo, as a talent who used to make unimaginable things happen in training.

“That was fun when you were with Ronaldo the Brazilian and he told you, ‘Today, I’m going to nutmeg you twice.'”

Right after, the Brazilian used to pull those off, as Zizou highlighted, “Because if you say that and you don’t deliver, everyone makes jokes”.

Upon listening to the story, Parker asked, “That’s the most skilled player you played with?” to which the former midfielder replied, “Yes, by far”. He further shed light on the special talent of the number 9, mentioning, “You are doing your job but there are guys that make you feel something next to you”.

Tony got to relate to this as he identified his former San Antonio Spurs teammate Manu Ginobili as one such performer.

“I would say, my Ronaldo was [Manu] Ginobili,”

he highlighted before adding, “A lefty Argentinian. He was doing stuff that you don’t see every day”. The 4x NBA champion stated,

“In training, he was always trying things that you don’t do in games and he always said, ‘Maybe one day I’ll do it’. And he did it”.

Paying tribute to the endeavors of the international superstar of the league, Parker mentioned, “He was so crazy and creative that he was the most unique player I played with”. In terms of uniqueness, the 41-year-old even put Manu over an all-time great like Tim Duncan.

“Duncan was the best but Ginobili was the most unique.”

The close bond between Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili

Coming from foreign lands, they both had their own set of challenges to overcome in the NBA. Yet, they found a common ground as the duo combined to run the backcourt for their Texas franchise. It resulted in an iconic chemistry as the organization won four championships with them.

Ginobili thus paid his due respect to the French star in his Hall of Fame speech. “We had our priorities straight,” the 46-year-old mentioned before adding, “We never let our egos get in the way”. Joking about how Parker used to get his way “most of the time,” the shooting guard declared, “We got the job done”.

So, the mutual respect between the champions remains evident to this date. This showcases the unspoken side of the field of competitive sports as certain connections last forever.

Spurs legend David Robinson is to be a huge watch enthusiast, in addition to his talents on the court. In a 2018 interview with YouTube channel ‘Hodinkee,’ The Admiral talked about his love for watches. The 2-time NBA champion and 1995 MVP can be seen talking about two incidents in which he either received a watch or gifted them to his teammates.

The first story came after the conclusion of his MVP season, as Robinson revealed that he had given each member of his Spurs roster a steel watch as a gift.

“ It was a Bertolucci at the time. I thought that they were a lot of fun, stainless steel, Bertolucci, beautiful watches. Just to get them tuned in to, hey, what this world of watches was about at the time,” he said, claiming that his intention was to ensure his teammates understood what watches were ‘all about’ during that time. These watches would have set The Admiral back by 1000s of dollars, but surely his teammates would’ve appreciated the gesture.

The second incident was related to Tim Duncan. Robinson revealed that he got a rather unusual watch as a gift from his legendary teammate upon his retirement.

“Tim Duncan gave me this watch, and it’s a very unusual watch with kind of a different type of a deployant clasp that comes around the face of the watch, which is fantastic,” he said, before revealing why the watch was special to him.

Robinson revealed that it came with a personal message engraved behind it. The message ensured that the watch would never leave his collection. “And on the back, you know he engraved it to me, it says to 50, my teammate, mentor and friend,” he said.

Robinson went on to talk about how his big hands and wrists meant that he did not usually like watches with small faces. However, the heartfelt message from Tim Duncan on the back of the Piaget Upstream Chronograph meant that it had a special significance.

David Robinson has a range of expensive watches in his possession

Robinson was a 10-time All-Star and part of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team as well. The 2-time Champion was regarded as one of the best players of his generation and has a passion for watches off the court.

According to Hodinkee, Robinson owns several expensive watches in addition to the Piaget watch he received from Duncan. For example, Robinson revealed that he owns a Hublot Big Bang, a Rolex Yacht-Master, and even a Panerai Luminor 1950 GMT Ceramica, which was a gift from his wife.

Other notable watches that he owns include the F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Quantième Perpétuel, and a Franck Muller King Conquistador.
