Even successful bodybuilding icons like Chris Bumstead haven’t gone unscathed in their journey towards achievements. The Canadian bodybuilder crossed many hurdles before winning his first Mr. Olympia Classic Physique title. And now, with five of them in a row, he is all set to prepare for more.

In a recent post on his Instagram handle, Bumstead opened up about the reality of winning five titles. Including glimpses of all the blood, sweat, and tears it took to reach the zenith, he wanted fans to understand the hardships of the sport. And fans came in full force to support and respect the bodybuilding icon with their comments.

Compiling a series of his videos, he created the post to show what people thought winning five titles was like versus how it went. People only see the final results that Bumstead presented on stage, where he came in with his best conditioning. However, what they didn’t see was the hard work he put in to achieve those gains.

“Most things we want in life are harder than you think, but more rewarding than you can ever imagine.”

Fans immediately reacted to the post with encouraging comments. Fellow bodybuilder and winner of the Mr. Olympia 2023, Derek Lunsford, agreed with the way Bumstead expressed the struggles:

“What people don’t see…”

Another bodybuilder, Philip Visicaro, resonated with the Canadian’s sentiments and penned a long note:

“This is very real. The pressure mentally is immense…I think he does a good job of staying humble and respecting everyone. And as of now he’s the classic GOAT.”

Another fan encouraged Bumstead with some kind words:

“Keep inspiring the World! You are the Face of Bodybuilding Worldwide!!!”

A fan even related to the bodybuilding champion’s post and commented something along similar lines:

“It is the work & the journey that most people don’t see.”

And finally, one follower was convinced that a tough feat like this was something that only Bumstead could pull off:

“It’s hard but only Cbum can do it.”

Bumstead’s reality check was enough for many to not only get a glimpse of what the prep for bodybuilding championships looked like but also what sacrifices were made behind the scenes. In the end, the reality check only made friends and fans respect him more.

A recap on how the year has been for Chris Bumstead

With this reality check, Bumstead aimed to be transparent with his progress. This year has been quite eventful for the champion, even after winning his fifth title in a row. Moving houses and preparing for a new member has been a priority since he recovered from his hair transplant.

The new year brought him some respite from training, as he took a month off from his gym to spend time with his family. After getting back to the grind, he even collaborated with his onstage rival Ramon Dino to film workout videos. Now, with his eyes on the next Mr. Olympia title, Bumstead is all set to make history and hopefully inspire many more.

Mr. Olympia has churned out some of the most jaw-dropping bodybuilders that fitness enthusiasts have witnessed. Popular coach Hany Rambod has gotten around to training many of these champions, including Chris Bumstead and Derek Lunsford. The former is the current reigning champion of the Classic Physique category, while the latter is the latest Men’s Open title holder.

A few months ago, the duo teamed up to train together for an off-season routine. Since Rambod coached both of them, it was easy for Lunsford and Bumstead to collaborate and flaunt their friendship with the world. With some intense warm-up in the form of machine lat pull-downs, they started their workout with a bang.

Both Bumstead and Lunsford focused on technique over pushing themselves. Since it was an off-season routine, they had fun while Rambod guided them through each exercise. In total, the duo went through four tasks:

  • Iso-Lateral Lat Pull-down
  • T-Bar Rows
  • Seated Cable Rows
  • Incline Dumbbell Rows

Starting with the iso-lateral lat pull-down, Rambod instructed them to try two different grips: reverse for the first few sets and neutral for the subsequent ones. They then moved on to the T-bar rows to benefit the back muscles. Here, coach Rambod had a useful tip:

“Make sure that you’re being able to bring your elbows back and you’ll be able to contract your last to some degree. If you end up using too much weight, all you’re doing is a shrug.”

The group then performed multiple sets of seated cable rows next. This workout would help their overall strength and posture. Their last workout was a few sets of inline dumbbell rows. This exercise set their back muscles on fire, and while Bumstead and Lunsford took turns performing the routine, they finished strong and satisfied with their one-of-a-kind plan.

Under Rambod’s expertise, the champions could annihilate a killer back workout and inspire other fitness enthusiasts. The popular coach made sure that they didn’t injure themselves and had fun along the way. But they’re not the only titleholders to be trained under him.

Hany Rambod: The Mr. Olympia star coach who took in Derek Lunsford, Chris Bumstead, Hadi Choopan, and many more

Over the years, Rambod has established himself in the industry as one of the elite trainers in the bodybuilding world. While his own bodybuilding career was short-lived, he made sure to push his clients up to the top. With a star-studded clientele, Rambod has only raked up his reviews.

To date, the coach has trained elite bodybuilders like Phil Heath, Jay Cutler, Hadi Choopan, Big Ramy, Chris Bumstead, Derek Lunsford, and many others. The titles have only piled up high every year. His USP is his scientific approach and trademark training program that helps bodybuilding veterans shoot through their routines with big gains. Fans love to witness his work, and he often offers suggestions and fitness tips on social media.

Five-time Mr. Olympia Classic Physique Champion Chris Bumstead is popularly known for his bodybuilding prowess. A businessman and public speaker, Chris was never one to shy away from sharing his thoughts. Recently, the professional bodybuilder appeared for an interview with Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, a psychologist, and author.

During the interview, they discussed various factors in CBum’s life. However, there was one question that Peterson asked him that stood out: “Where do you see your life progressing?”

Bumstead responded to the question and stated how he has been grateful for being successful at a very young age. However, he pointed out that bodybuilding isn’t forever for him, and he would never do it past 30. Now, that Bumstead is approaching that age, he understands that there is more to life than bodybuilding.

“Bodybuilding was never forever for me. This past year, I had a lot of things on my plate, and I spread myself a little bit too thin, and I wasn’t able to compete at the level I wanted to at the beginning of the year.”

He further mentioned in the interview that he once had a book called “The One Thing,” which talked about how if you want to be in the top one percent in something particular, you need to give your complete focus.

It was then that Bumstead realized he was trying to do too many things while being Mr. Olympia. Therefore, if he wanted to be the best at everything, like being the best father, best husband, or businessman, bodybuilding would not have to be his primary focus.

“If I want to be at least like top 5 percent in a lot of these things, I can work really hard at that, but if bodybuilding is still being the best in the world for me, at least it takes a lot out of me, therefore, it’s sacrificing from other things, and I started to notice that, and that’s not what I wanted.”

Therefore, what Chris is looking forward to in his future goals and what lies ahead of him is wanting to be the best father he can be. He wants to be a role model for his child as she grows up, just like his father was to him. And he is excited to make an impact on his children and watch them grow.

Further in the interview, Chris mentions to Peterson that he is grateful for everything. Especially when he hears stories from people who follow him and the impact he has created on them. Bumstead has always been true and honest to himself throughout his entire journey. And this shows how vulnerable the bodybuilder is when he showcases his passion through tears.

“I’m a crier sometimes. I just started crying, and I’ve expressed that I’ve cried on stage after Olympias, and I’ve talked about my list, which is the vulnerability.”

While speaking about vulnerability, Chris recalled an incident that occurred during his Mr. Olympia competition. A 12- or 13-year-old boy handed Chris a letter, unable to speak well, with tears in his eyes. He thanked Chris, handing him a note, for all he had done for him and how it had helped him.

When he opened the letter, the little boy had written that he had Tourettes, an issue Chris had too. Bumstead still feels embarrassed when he thinks about his lisping issue and says how he worked through it all to overcome it. The little boy wrote about how much of a role model Chris is to him and how he had been bullied and felt sad in the past. But he’s building up all this courage because of Bumstead.

“When I think about it now, I just feel so grateful for the impact that the work I’m doing for myself and my family is also having on the community around me, and that story and that feeling alone filled me with so much energy to keep doing what I’m doing.”

Therefore, to conclude what his future will look like, Bumstead states that bodybuilding is never forever for him. However much he has enjoyed the relentless battles, he does not put it above his relationships. He, therefore, feels that it’s time to put that energy into being the best father he can be. Hence, he states that he wants to be a role model to as many people as he can. And he wishes to do more for the bodybuilding community.

“I want those lessons. I have to be able to help other people in the bodybuilding community or the other kids who follow me. I want to be able to apply more to them, more to my family, and more to my children.”

Chris Bumstead shares that he has bigger priorities than a title

In an interview with PBD podcast hosts, the star shared about his health issues and how he takes care of them. Chris Bumstead spoke about becoming a father and having already battled an autoimmune disease. Through this all, the star wonders if aiming titles should be on his priority list.

In 2018, doctors diagnosed him with a rare kidney autoimmune disease called IGA Nephropathy. This causes the immune system to attack itself. This required him to be in the hospital for a prolonged period, disturbing his Olympia prep. Bumstead shared that Olympia prep included a lot of blood work and checkups that would determine his status.

However, if he is advised to sit out as being in the best interest of his health, then he will follow it. The biggest news for him is having a baby with his fiancee, Courtney King. This means more to CBum than any title.

“The number one thing I’ve always wanted to be in my life was a dad. And if being ten times Mr. Olympia would take away from me being dad, f**k 10 times Mr. Olympia! That’s not what I care about.”

Diets are a crucial part of a bodybuilder’s life. With each calorie in, the amount of it burned would vary. For someone like Chris Bumstead, who needs to maintain an aesthetic physique, having a well-charted diet is necessary. He recently opened up about it.

In a conversation with Jordan B. Peterson, Bumstead elaborated on his philosophies surrounding food, calories, and a planned diet. He revealed the secret to his title-winning physique, which is surprisingly not as complicated as one would imagine.

Peterson brought up the subject of his diet while talking about how bodybuilding was a gradual process. However, instead of listing down a planned structure, Bumstead revealed that he followed a basic principle: shifting the amount of calories through the year.

He typically began with the maximum amount of calories at the beginning of the year. However, once he knew that he needed to start chiseling down, he reduced the intake of calories and increased his cardio workout sessions.

“So let’s say in my offseason, when I’m at my heaviest, I’m eating about 5,500-5,000 calories. And at my lowest, at the end of my prep, I’ll be eating about 1,500 calories.”

This technique worked in two ways: the input grew consistently less compared to the output. But apart from shifting the amount of calories throughout the year, did Bumstead have fixed numbers or ratios for specific food elements?

“There’s like a set amount of protein people will eat, and it stays around. So I’ll eat about 300 gm of protein in a day, and as my calories come down, I’m normally pulling away my carbs and my fats and keeping my protein.”

Therefore, the ratios do change. But that’s mainly because of his caloric intake. This idea is similar to the late icon Mike Mentzer’s philosophy. Since he believed that a calorie is a calorie, to lose weight, one needed to cut it down, no matter what form it came in.

Mike Mentzer’s diet ideology resembled the current diet principle of Chris Bumstead

Mentzer had taken the bodybuilding world by storm with his heavy-duty workout regime. However, he also talked extensively about effective ways to lose excess fat. One of the techniques he swore by was journaling the amount of caloric intake regularly to work on it later.

He believed that a calorie was a calorie, no matter what the source was. Maintaining a journal and using a calorie-counting book to note the amount of calories consumed every week helped him cut down efficiently. Combined with his heavy-duty plan, Mentzer guaranteed optimum results.

With a new chapter in his life coming soon, Chris Bumstead can’t wait to be a dad and a bodybuilding champion again this year. The Canadian has been taking fans on a journey through his workout schedule, exercising, and healing his body before the big show.

Recently, he went through an intense arm workout session with his partner, Courtney King. Since she is still pregnant, she performed a different routine suited to her needs. Bumstead, on the other hand, had his plan set for the day. The goal was to go intense in moderation, focusing on recovery.

He previously worked out with professional trainer Justin King, where he learned some recovery-based exercises. He began with some external rotators, trap raises, and a neck-strengthening exercise as part of his warm-up routine. Since he planned to follow King’s recommended regime, Bumstead’s focus was mostly on healing his body as much as he could.

He starts his workout with three sets of bench presses with varying weights. While he struggled to finish, he spoke about how he planned to stray slightly away from King’s recommendation since he intended to lift heavy. Despite sore and tight shoulders, he focused on working out through the pain instead of resting and lifting lighter.

“I just haven’t been training heavy at all. So, I feel like the only way for me to ever get back into it is just train through the pain… Justin’s more of the preventative rather than reactive when you hurt yourself… so, I’m combining the best of both worlds.”

He moved on to a few sets of lat pull-downs before returning to bench presses again. Alternating between the exercises was an efficient way to work parts of the upper body while completing sets. Throughout his routine, Bumstead focused on his gripping variations, alternating between supinated, semi-pronated, and even machine-assisted.

“I’m keeping the weight the same, but I’m moving my arms and grip to make it easier for myself as I go along.”

He wrapped up his routine with a couple of sets of cable rope tricep pushdowns and alternated that with bicep curls. He admitted that he skipped one exercise—the standing Arnold Press—because he previously worked on his shoulders and didn’t feel the need to do it. Tired yet satisfied, Bumstead could finally take a break for the day.

Chris Bumstead recently shared a life update

The five-time Classic Physique champion had a lot going on in his life recently. In a recent video, he spoke about the various projects he had been working on. Apart from his baby, whom he and his partner Courtney are expecting soon, he also had an Olympia to prepare for.

Amidst this, Bumstead traveled to Brazil to collaborate with his onstage rival, Ramon Dino. The duo featured on local podcasts and shot videos before the reigning champion returned home. 2024 is set to be an exciting year for the champion, and fans can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Mr. Olympia has witnessed many icons who’ve stood the test of time and earned the title of GOAT. Chris Bumstead, being one of them, has dominated the Classic Physique category for five consecutive years now. Yet, amidst all the competition, the champion has always respected his rivals – particularly the one who started it all.

Breon Ansley had snagged the throne before Bumstead could learn the ropes of the Classic Physique championship. Both were touted as fierce rivals, with a lot of banter between them. Yet, Ansley later planned to move on to the 212 division, and both competitors buried their hatchets for a stronger friendship.

In a recent playful moment between the two, Ansley shared a throwback from 2021 where he and Bumstead stood to pose for the camera at the championship.

The men gave their best during the competition, although the Canadian bodybuilder ended up winning the title. However, while sharing the photo on his Instagram stories, Ansley made a mistake.

While the photo was from 2021, the Californian mistakenly identified it as a glimpse from 2019. Reminiscing about the good old days, the icon shared the photo, albeit getting confused about the timeline. He later admitted his fault.

“@cbum actually corrected me guys. These Olympias sometimes run together on me; so in honor of 2021.”

Not only did Bumstead correct his rival on the timeline, but he also didn’t miss an opportunity to tease him about the mistake. Sharing the photo on his Instagram story, along with Ansley’s miss, the Canadian icon laughed:

“Easy to lose track we’re getting old.”

All jokes aside, the men have always supported each other through various competitions. While they were the biggest onstage rivals, Bumstead’s growth didn’t cause any malice between them. In fact, the five-time Classic Physique champion once even admitted how important Ansley was to his growth as a bodybuilder.

Chris Bumstead confessed about his ‘only true rival’ – Breon Ansley

In a candid conversation on the PBD podcast, Bumstead pondered whether or not any of his competitors were quirky enough to keep him on his toes. And one of the top prospects was Ansley himself. The 6’1 Californian kept Bumstead away from the title in 2017 and 2018.

Their camaraderie and rivalry kept Bumstead motivated to hustle harder. He admitted that Ansley, at one point, was his only true rival who pushed his buttons harder. However, it led him to keep winning the title consistently to date. That’s why Bumstead is the GOAT of the Classic Physique Division in bodybuilding.

Often, marketing in bodybuilding can take new flights. In the case of Christopher Bumstead and his partnership with Raw Nutrition, the team planned to do something topical yet fun. This initiative caused hilarity among fans.

With the recent commotion surrounding the Grammy’s and Taylor Swift not only winning her fourth Album of the Year award but also announcing her new album, Bumstead decided to ride the trend wave. The bodybuilder went on to make a parody of the popstar’s upcoming album’s cover along with a write-up.

Featuring Bumstead in an elegant pose shot in a frame similar to Swift’s upcoming release, ‘The Tortured Poets.’ The aesthetics of the picture matched that of the album cover. Vintage color grading, along with the bodybuilding icon splayed out amidst a bunch of pillows that looked hilariously similar to the popstar’s music art, tied it all together.

But that was not all. As a treat to fans, the team took the parody a notch higher by mimicking the poetry that Swift wrote for her album. But instead of potential song lyrics, the poem read more like an ode to the gym by a fitness enthusiast.

“And so I enter into the gym
My arms of much skinny
My legs, that weep of soreness
My gym bros who balled before me
The ick ick ick of tripods in the gym
My veins fueled with Thavage.”

And with a humorous take on the newest talk in the music world, it seems Bumstead might have an alternate career in the making. The post accompanied the concluding line of the poem as the caption, reading:

“All’s fair in gains and lifting…”

Given Bumstead’s 23+ million followers, the post seemed to be a hit among bodybuilding enthusiasts. Since they got a glimpse of a new side of their favorite Canadian icon, the comments under the post featured people going rogue.

The parody, courtesy of Raw Nutrition and Bumstead’s brilliant sense of humor, attracted fans’ baffled yet fun comments. Some pointed out the extent of similarity between the bodybuilding icon and the popstar, thus deeming it “CBum’s Version.

Others demanded a collaboration between the fitness icon and the singer and wrote, “a Taylor swift and cbum collab would go crazy .” However, since it was a brilliant ad for Raw Nutrition, fans appreciated the marketing team, calling for a raise.

Throughout Mr. Olympia’s history, the introduction of the Classic Physique category in 2016 gave the masses some of the most iconic bodybuilders. Chris Bumstead worked his way to the top and has dominated the section for a while now. While his wins weren’t easy to achieve, his dedication to the sport paid off and made him the GOAT of the category.

When did Chris Bumstead begin competing?

After winning his pro card in 2016 at 21, Bumstead chose the Classic Physique category despite suggestions to go to the Men’s Open. Since then, he found his home and began training under his brother-in-law, Iain Valliere. His first win came in 2019 after beating his longtime onstage rival, Breon Ansley. But before that, he had to cross some health-related hurdles that challenged his title.

What health issues does CBum suffer from?

In 2018, the prospects for the Mr. Olympia title looked promising. However, Bumstead witnessed his legs retaining too much water and rushed to the hospital to get it checked. After a lot of careful consideration and diagnosis, Bumstead announced that he was suffering from an autoimmune disease called IGA Nephropathy, which targets the kidneys.

This disease led to him falling back and losing the title in 2018. The next year, he suffered from a hernia but powered through it to bag the Sandow for the Classic Physique category.

So, how many titles does Chris Bumstead have?

His winning streak began in 2019 and has been going ever since. Bumstead has a total of five Mr. Olympia Classic Physique titles. And he’s already preparing for his next championship with full force.

Who pushed CBum to do better on stage?

Throughout his bodybuilding career, Bumstead has always been open about his rivalries with fellow Classic Physique contenders. After he dethroned Breon Ansley in 2019, he confessed that while the duo have often bantered in public, Ansley pushed him to be better. After the latter’s move to 212 Olympia, the onstage rivals buried their hatchets and wished each other good luck.

Bumstead’s latest on-stage top competitor is the Brazilian beast, Ramon Dino. The duo improves their physiques every year, making it harder for judges and fans to pick the best out of the best.

Bumstead recently admitted that Ramon played a massive role in motivating him to be better on stage. While the duo share a friendly relationship and often collaborate, their camaraderie is often welcomed by fans.

The Classic Physique division has had one of the greatest champions in the form of Chris Bumstead for five years now. The Canadian icon began his winning streak in 2019 and, since then, has been unstoppable. But what makes him the GOAT of bodybuilding is his impressive progress through the years.

Now that Bumstead has turned 29, the bodybuilding star is witnessing many personal and professional ups while preparing for changes. While he prepares for new twists and turns in his life, he spent his birthday surrounded by loved ones in his special vacation place.

Bumstead recently visited Aspen, Colorado, for a snowy getaway with his partner, Courtney King. Snowboarding on icy hills and spending his special day at a scenic place seemed to be the icon’s ideal birthday plans. Meanwhile, in a series of Instagram stories, he also shared some heartwarming birthday wishes from his friends and family.

Some that stood out were messages from his brother-in-law Ian Valliere, sister Melissa, and partner King. Valliere’s Instagram post carried a throwback picture of him, the icon, and Melissa from back when they were young. The lengthy caption talked about how the fellow bodybuilder felt being the GOAT’s brother-in-law.

“Honoured to have been part of your journey, as it taught me more than you will ever know. Excited to see you be a bad-ass dad. Proud to call you my brother. Happy Birthday @cbum”

Melissa’s post was a collage of the brother-sister duo’s pictures through the years. Calling him an inspiration, she expressed her love for him in an adorable message. Meanwhile, King dedicated an entire carousel worth of pictures of them, along with an emotional message:

“To my very best friend, my safety, the father of our child, my rock… I’m so thankful you were born! You really mean more to me than I can put into words. Happy birthday babe, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! PS can’t wait to eat organic funfetti cake with you tonight!”

Bumstead’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. The Canadian icon went through a tough phase full of setbacks before he claimed the title of being a GOAT. Throughout this, he has always appreciated his family sticking by his side and supporting him wherever necessary.

Chris Bumstead overcame illness and other hurdles to become the champion

Having competed in 2014 for the first time, Bumstead soon earned his Pro card in 2016 at the IFBB North American Bodybuilding Championships. His biggest hurdle came in the form of his autoimmune disease – IGA Nephropathy – that attacked his kidneys. In fact, this was the reason for his 2018 Mr. Olympia title loss.

Bouncing back from that was a challenge, yet Bumstead was up for it. After his diagnosis, he trained better to beat his long-time rival Breon Ansley and is now the reigning champion. While the future holds many possibilities, Bumstead is currently looking forward to being a good father and partner for his family.
