The upcoming Genesis Invitational could prove to be a great push for many top golfers in terms of Official World Golf Rankings. The tournament which is slated to begin on February 15 at Riviera Golf Course will feature 40 players from the top 50 in the world.

Apart from having an elevated $20 million prize purse, the upcoming PGA Tour signature event also offers massive world ranking points. Famous X user Nosferatu and self-proclaimed OWGR Guru have shared some of the golfer’s prospects to climb high in the rankings if they win the tournament this week.

If anyone from Matt Fitzpatrick, Brian Harman, and Max Homa wins the $4 million winner’s prize this week at Riviera Golf Course, they would jump to a career-high rank of fifth on the OWGR. Also, Sahith Theegala, who has been in impressive form lately and is ranked 20th in the world, could break into the top 10 in the world if he wins this week.

Let’s take a look at some top golfers who could climb high on the Official World Golf Rankings if they win the tournament:

1) Rory McIlroy

The popular Northern Irishman is currently ranked second in the world. If Rory McIlroy wins the Genesis Invitational, he will dethrone Scottie Scheffler from the top spot and become the new World No. 1 player in the OWGR.

Interestingly, McIlroy is the only player who could dethrone Scottie Scheffler this week at Riviera Golf Course.

2) Tiger Woods

The 15-time major champion will be making his first start of the 2024 season at the upcoming Genesis Invitational. If Tiger Woods manages to register his record 83rd PGA Tour title victory at Riviera Golf Course, he would climb around 850 spots to sit at 54th rank in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Woods has occupied the top spot in the OWGR for a record 683 weeks. But due to his deteriorating fitness, he has been out of the professional golf circuit resulting in him slipping too down in the World.

3) Ludvig Aberg

The young Swedish prodigy is already sitting on his career-best 11th rank in the Official World Golf Rankings. But if Ludvig Aberg wins his second PGA Tour title at Genesis Invitational, he would climb to World No. 5 place.

Ludvig Aberg has been sitting in the World No. 11 position from just 18 starts as a professional golfer. He could have broken Tiger Woods’ record, he had climbed to the current position in just one start less.

4) Viktor Hovland

The reigning FedEx Cup champion could regain his career-best ranking of third in the World if he receives the Genesis Invitational trophy from Tiger Woods this week. Viktor Hovland is currently ranked fifth in the World. Winning the tournament results in dethroning Jon Rahm from the World No. 3 spot on the OWGR.

5) Nicolai Hojgaard

The Danish origin golfer is rising up the ranks and is the newest addition to the PGA Tour. If Nicolai Hojgaard manages to win his first PGA Tour title at the Genesis Invitational this week, he would climb to career-high rankings of 11 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Now, all fans can do is wait and watch the upcoming Tiger Woods’ hosted Genesis Invitational. Who climbs higher on the Official World Golf Rankings will only be decided on Sunday when all four rounds are successfully concluded.

Adrian Meronk confirms that his Ryder Cup betrayal was the reason for his LIV Golf move. When he was left off the team, he was shocked, and then the sadness turned into anger. Meronk was fifth on the European Points list, yet Nicolai Hojgaard, who was 20 points behind, was chosen to play on the European team. But to restart his career, Meronk moved to LIV Golf after he received his PGA Tour card.

He revealed his feelings in a Telegraph Sport interview. Let’s take a look at what he had to say.

Adrian Meronk Reveals His Frustration That Led To His LIV Defection

Meronk, in an interview, bluntly stated that had he been on the Ryder Cup team, he would not have turned to LIV Golf.

“I don’t know, but I would probably not have come to LIV if I had played in the Ryder Cup…what I went through just made it easier to care more about myself and not care what other people think of me, or what other people want me to do.”

Added to that, he continued,

“What happened with the Ryder Cup just opened my eyes as to how everything works…The last two years I had really great years, but to be honest, I wasn’t enjoying it as much. I was just constantly on the road. We didn’t have a proper home, just packing from hotel to hotel, airport to airport.”

Meronk made this decision for his family and their well-being. LIV’s schedule also helps him make time for himself. He admitted to his family at Christmas that he wasn’t enjoying his career with so many tournaments and a routine life. He rather wanted to fall back and relax.

Meronk hasn’t given up his former tour card, so he might get a chance to play at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage next year. Meronk and other LIV golfers’ futures also depend on the PGAT-LIV talks and how they shape professional golf. As of now, Meronk has joined LIV and is focused on their event in Las Vegas.

Sunday was not quite favorable for the Danish origin’s Hojgaard brothers. Both Nicolai and Rasmus ended up as solo runner-ups this week, but, on different tours. The former lost to Matthieu Pavon at the Farmers Insurance Open by a mere margin of one stroke while the latter lost to Thorbjorn Olesen at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship by six strokes.

Nicolai Hojgaard was a strong contender to win this week’s PGA Tour event. However, he fell short of one stroke to record his first victory on the PGA Tour. His four-round scores were 67-66-73-70 and he earned $981,000 as prize money.

Meanwhile, his twin brother, Rasmus Hojgaard, had a similar day at work. He missed out winning his fourth DP World Tour title at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship. Despite shooting 66-64-68-69 in four rounds, he was six strokes shy of the winner, and his compatriot Thorbjorn Olesen. For finishing as solo runner-up, he earned a paycheck worth €253,916.58.

It is not ironic for the Hojgaard Brothers that they are already twins and have finished in the same spot but in different parts of the world. This is probably the first time in the history of golf that two twin brothers have ended up losing but finished on the same runner-up ranks on different tours.

Who is More Successful Among the Hojgaard Brothers, Nicolai or Rasmus?

Two brothers playing the same sport is not a new thing. However, twin brothers playing the same sport is very rare. In the game of golf, the Hojgaard brothers, Nicolai and Rasmus, are the first twins to play in the Open Championship together. They achieved the feat in 2023 at Royal Liverpool Golf Course.

Both brothers are equally talented and have achieved huge heights in the past few years. However, if we compare their statistics, it is quite tough to decide who is more successful among them. While Rasmus has recorded four DP World Tour victories, Nicolai is not too far and has won three titles so far.

Hojgaard brothers have taken the entire golfing fraternity by storm with their performances. Although Rasmus was the first to record a DP World Tour victory, Nicolai recorded his first professional victory as an amateur on the Nordic Golf League around two years before his twin brother.

Nicolai was also part of the 2023 European Ryder Cup team. He could only contribute 0.5 points for a winning cause. Meanwhile, Rasmus is yet to get a chance in the Senior Ryder Cup team, however, he was part of the European team at the Junior Ryder Cup in 2018.

If the statistics were compared before November 2023, Rasmus might have had an upper hand over his twin brother. But, Nicolai’s sensational victory at the DP World Tour Championship 2023 has given him a slight edge over his sibling. Well, the comparison does not quite matter as both of the Hojgaard brothers are disruptive forces in professional golf and are surely destined for greater things in the future.

Nicolai Hojgaard is one of the best drivers on the tour and ranks in the top five. He, thus, went on to share a few exclusive tips about how to go the extra yards. Nicolai Hojgaard had an eventful past year with a Ryder Cup debut followed by winning an event on the DP World Tour and receiving a PGA Tour card, barely before he turned 23.

These achievements were showered upon him as a result of his driving skills. Moreover, he ranked in the top 5 for his astounding driving distance on the DP World Tour. Added to that, he acquired the 8th position for the same skill over the world for 12 months at a stretch, concerning all the tours. The golfer joined an interview to explain a few strategies that will help budding golfers go a few more yards.

Having The Right Grip And Controlling The Speed

Body posture plays a crucial role in golf. Also, the way one sets up the ball and the balance is required. Then, to create a balance of speed and power, one has to load the right side of the backswing and move to the left side of the same swing. The ball should be positioned inside the front foot and the club should be positioned vertically to swing the ball.

Arms Should Go High In The Backswing

Hojgaard said in an interview,

“I try to get my arms high in the backswing, so when I swing down the club falls naturally into place. This helps prevent too much of a slice for amateurs, because it stops you having to come ‘over the top’ if your backswing is too low and on the inside. Higher hands also enable you to create more speed because the swing is longer.”

The Left Leg Would Initiate The Downswing

Going forward in the interview, he continued to talk about how to get the downswing right.

“One of the drills I do is to finish my backswing and feel like I’m starting the downswing with my left knee moving a touch towards the target. From there, I rotate, which helps to shallow the club out so it attacks the ball from the inside and the clubhead is on the way up when I hit the ball.”

Make A Push From The Ground

The push should be up the ground and away from the ground with the use of feet. The speed should be on the downswing rather than coming from the top. This will help to process power in the hitting area. He also said that he uses his core for better gameplay.

These are a few of the tips Nicolai Hojgaard shared with budding golfers.

In the ongoing Farmers Insurance Open, Stephan Jaeger had a terrific first three rounds at the Torrey Pines Golf Course. He leads the table alone after the end of 54 holes and is followed by Nicolai Hojgaard and Matthieu Pavon who are just one stroke behind. However, his performance is not the only thing that is making noise on the internet.

An X (formerly Twitter) user shared a video of the ongoing PGA Tour event. A drone recorded Jaeger walking off a corner at Torrey Pines and start peeing!

Stephan Jaeger must be really holding it in at the Farmers Insurance Open. However, he was fabulous at Torrey Pines and fans must certainly have laughed off this funny moment caught on camera.

How Has Stephan Jaeger Performed At The Farmers Insurance Open?

The 34-year-old German golfer started his campaign for the ongoing PGA Tour event at the Torrey Pines South Course on Thursday. He shot a blistering round of 4 under 68 in the first round and his scorecard had five birdies and a double bogey.

Stephan Jaeger followed his incredible form even on Friday. He carded a sensational second-round score of 8 under 64. This time his scorecard had seven birdies, a bogey, and an unbelievable eagle on the 9th hole.

The German seemingly had a drastic third round on Saturday. He returned to the South course and managed to card a round of 1 over 73. Jaeger shot five brilliant birdies but unfortunately had six bogeys in his scorecard. Although his previous round lead helped him to lead the table after 54 holes, despite having a forgettable round of golf.

Stephan Jaeger will tee off at 2:10 p.m. ET in the final round on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open. He is paired alongside tied second-ranked players, Matthieu Pavon and Nicolai Hojgaard. He must be hoping to find his form back at Torrey Pines South Course and record his first-ever PGA Tour victory this weekend.

LIV Golf has taken the initiative to fill up its remaining spots in the league by attracting Ryder Cup warriors with lucrative deals. As per reports, Nicolai Hojgaard and Tommy Fleetwood received multi-million dollar offers from the league, but both of them ended up turning down the deal weeks before its first event tees off.

The Telegraph has further stated that Luke Donald’s squad members were lured with tens of millions to join Jon Rahm‘s new team, Legion XIII GC, but both decided to retain their cards and stay loyal to their tours. Tyrell Hatton is LIV’s new target as they rigorously try to fill up vacant spots in the 13 teams before LIV Golf begins its third season at Mayokaba. Moreover, Hatton’s move to LIV for Rahm’s team will make sense. Let’s find out why.

Tyrell Hatton Becomes LIV Golf’s Next Target

Hatton and Rahm were paired up for the Ryder Cup on the European team. Their team won two matches in the international event. One was against Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns, where they achieved a 4&3 victory. Then, they secured another win against Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay by 2&1. The golfers displayed outstanding performances in the Sunday singles. Having shared a level of understanding, it is quite likely that Hatton will join Rahm on his team.

But Fleetwood, who helped Europe win the Ryder Cup trophy at a crucial point, won’t join Rahm’s team until he appears in the 2025 Ryder Cup. Some inside reports suggest that Hatton has yet to get a formal letter but has already had the talks done with the Saudi-backed league.

Rory McIlroy stated that he never received an offer from LIV, and Ludvig Aberg already turned down an offer from the league last year. Moreover, Aberg’s Ryder Cup partner, Viktor Hovland, also turned down any hopes for a LIV switch. As far as American golfers are concerned, Tony Finau has rejected a LIV offer and stayed with the PGA Tour.

Meanwhile, there are talks about the agreement framework, and as per latest news, DP World Tour chief Keith Pelley has confirmed that a deal will be reached by April, before he parts ways with the tour

Dubai Desert Classic has already started at the Majlis course at the Emirates Golf Club, UAE. The DP World Tour event features stalwart European stars such as Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood,  Luke Donald, and Padraig Harrington, including the reigning Open Championship winner Brian Harman.

The field also has young talents such as Nicolai Hojgaard, Rasmus Hojgaard, Cameron Young, Alex Fitzpatrick, and many others. However, there are only a few players in contention to win the Dubai Desert Classic in the 132-player field. Let’s take a closer look at the top picks for the ongoing DP World Tour event:

5) Cameron Young

The 26-year-old American is making his first appearance in the entirely sanctioned DP World Tour event. Although he has not recorded any wins on the PGA Tour so far, he does have four professional victories under his name. But seeing his form in the opening round, he seems a hot pick for the ongoing Dubai Desert Classic.

Cameron Young has recorded six runner-ups in 53 starts on the PGA Tour. So, this time around on the DP World Tour, he could hope to record his first prominent victory.

4) Tommy Fleetwood

The Englishman was phenomenal last week at the inaugural Dubai Invitational. He recorded his seventh victory on the DP World Tour. Also, it came after two winless seasons. However, Tommy Fleetwood seems to be in brilliant form and maximize the same at the Dubai Desert Classic.

Although he was placed T12 on the leaderboard after the first round was suspended, Fleetwood can surely jump to the top with the kind of caliber he has.

3) Rasmus Hojgaard

The 22-year-old Danish golfer and the twin brother of Nicolai Hojgaard is a top guy to watch out for at the ongoing Dubai Desert Classic. He has been pretty consistent on the DP World Tour in the last season. Even in last week’s Dubai Desert Classic, he finished T11 on the leaderboard.

Rasmus Hojgaard will be hoping to win his first title of 2024 and get better momentum moving forward with the season.

2) Rory McIlroy

The current World No. 2 missed out on winning the Dubai Invitational last week after he ended joint runner-up. He will be hoping for better this time at the Dubai Desert Classic. If he manages to win this week it will be his 17th title on the DP World Tour.

Rory McIlroy is also the most successful player in the tournament’s history. He has already won the title three times and will be vying for his fourth title this week.

1) Adrian Meronk

The first-ever Polish golfer to record a win on the Dubai Desert Classic is certainly a hot favorite to win the Dubai Desert Classic. Adrian Meronk has been consistent on the DP World Tour in the past few years. Last year when he played at the Majlis course, he could not make it inside the cut line. However, after day one he well placed on tied for fifth rank and will be hoping to record his fifth victory on the Wentworth-based tour this weekend.

The Majlis course of the Emirates Golf Club, UAE has a history of challenging players as the days progress. So, a lot would depend on the conditions for any of these golfers to win the tournament. To see if one of these five players wins, all that fans can do is wait and watch the tournament until Sunday, January 21.
