The 28-year-old American golfer is a mini-tour pro and was rewarded with a Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption by Woods to participate in the third PGA Tour signature event. Although the tournament offers the last finishing golfers a $52,000 paycheck, having a chat with the 15-time major champion was greater than money for Johnson.

On Friday, the Ohio-born golfer shot a four-foot par putt that got him inside the cutline to proceed into the weekend’s play. Making it inside the cutline already guaranteed him at least a $52,000 paycheck which would be his career-best earning in a single tournament.

However, Chase Johnson was not concerned about the money. All that got him excited was Tiger Woods taking some time off to meet him at the back of the locker room to have a chat. Although he met with the 82-time PGA Tour champ before, that meeting was quick and very short. This time he talked to him about golf stuff and got his father, Mel, to meet the legendary golfer.

As quoted by Golf Digest, the 28-year-old American golfer said,

“My dad… he nearly lost it.” Johnson said, “He was, like, ‘Anybody get a picture of that?’ He was very excited, and I was excited, too. I met my idol.”

Chase Johnson was looking like young Tiger Woods when he competed at the Firestone Country Club. Since then, he had been seeking autographs from the 15-time major champion. When asked if he received an autograph from Woods, he replied.

“Didn’t get it.” Johnosn added, “Had a glove, but didn’t have a Sharpie. I was asking around, anybody got a Sharpie? There were 20 people there and no one did. Tiger said, don’t worry, we’ll take care of you by the end of the week. Obviously, there were unforeseen circumstances.”

Chase Johnson currently plays on the APGA Tour and has made his fifth start on the PGA Tour. Although he could not get an autograph from his idol Tiger Woods, his golfing journey has just begun. If he performs well, who knows, he might turn out to become a great golfer like his idol.

He revealed that an emergency bathroom situation forced Spieth to overlook the scorecard and sign the wrong one.

“He was really sick and he had a rough last hole. I can see how it all went down.” Added to that, he continued, “I heard he had to go to the restroom and came back like a minute later and the card was wrong. Maybe there needs to be some sort of softening on the rules, but for the most part we all kind of know what goes on in there. It’s really unfortunate it happened.”

Schauffele thinks that these are archaic rules, and that eliminating a golfer like Spieth for such a mistake is sheer idiocracy.

“He’s a big pull for us, he’s a top-three pull for us on tour so it’s not good that he’s not here.”

At the time of withdrawal, the 48-year-old American was on two-over-par scores which meant, at that time, he was missing the cutline by one stroke.

After the golf legend chose to withdraw from his own hosted Genesis Invitational, he was seen going off the course by a golf cart. Later, he was seen going out of the clubhouse in his car. Soon after he ended his campaign at the Riviera Golf Course, his manager and vice president of  TGR Ventures, Rob McNamara, spoke to the media and explained Woods’ condition.

McNamara said that Tiger Woods was having “flu-like symptoms” on Thursday night, and later, the symptoms were way worse on Friday morning. He added that the 15-time major champion did come to play but things got even bad as he started to feel “dizzy.”

“He started feeling some flu-like symptoms last night [on Thursday]. Woke up this morning [Friday], they were worse than the night previous. He had a little bit of a fever and that was better during the warm-up, but then when he got out there and was walking and playing, he started feeling dizzy.”

Rob McNamara later revealed that Tiger Woods was “treated with an IV Bag” and was doing better.

“Ultimately, the doctors are saying he’s got potentially some type of flu and that he was dehydrated. He’s been treated with an IV bag and he’s doing much, much better,” McNamara added.

Tiger Woods withdrawing from Genesis Invitational means that he last completed an official PGA Tour event back in 2023 at the same Riviera Golf Course event. He is likely to play in the Masters Tournament later in April 2024. However, there is no clarity if he will make another start before the first major tournament of the season.

Spieth had a good start in the first round with 66 and in the second round, he carded four birdies on holes 1, 5, 7, and 17. But his four bogeys until hole 16 and a double bogey on hole 18 landed him at 73. But his performance wasn’t the reason to get out of the Genesis field. Rather, his recklessness in writing the wrong score for hole 4 got him disqualified from the field.

Thus, the field of Riviera has now entered the weekend with the top 48 players. As of now, Patrick Cantlay is sitting atop the leaderboard, and nobody could overthrow him in the past two days. His total is 13-under with no one in sight. Thus, it is to be seen who wins the Genesis title this year at Riviera.

Woods wore all-white in the opening of the Genesis Invitational and for round two, he planned a throwback look, resembling his first appearance at Riviera 32 years ago. The Sun Day Red official account has spoken a few words about this look.

Analyzing Tiger Woods’ Performance On Day One Of The Genesis Invitational

The 15-time major winner started off his campaign at the Riviera Golf course with a stellar birdie on the first hole, but followed it with two consecutive bogeys on the second and third holes. Before completing his front nine holes, he shot two more birdies on fourth and sixth holes and had a 1 under par score.

Tiger Woods started his back nine holes with an unfortunate bogey on 10th hole. In the following 11th hole, he again got fans in awe with a blistering birdie. But the moment of joy was short-lived as he shot two more bogeys on the 12th and 15th hole. In the last two holes of the 2024 Genesis Invitational opening round, he carded a birdie and then bogey to finish with a score of 1 over par 72.

Fans will hope for the 82-time PGA Tour champion to finish inside the cutline in his first 2024 season start. For that, Woods will have to play more calculatively by avoiding bogeys in the second round on Friday when he tees off at 2:54 p.m. ET.

Woods was coming back to professional golf on the PGA Tour after he withdrew from the Masters Tournament last April. Although he started the first round with a birdie, it followed plenty of bogeys throughout the day. Then, Woods finally went on to admit that he was nervous.

Woods joined an interview post-round and shared his experience:

“Definitely nervous…I care about how I play, and certainly I was feeling the nerves starting out.”

After his nerves subsided, he was shedding off the rust at Genesis that had accumulated in his period of rehabilitation. 

“A lot of good and a lot of indifferent” said Woods, who returned to his home soil and secured one-over 72, which is 7 shots behind Patrick Cantlay. Woods thinks his preparation might be lacking. 

“I think sharpness…Making adjustments on the fly … and the feel for a round and how to make those adjustments. When we were playing here, I was getting better each and every day. But then again, I haven’t played in a while again. That’s kind of the frustrating part of it.”

With that, Woods made only seven pars and bogeyed the hole at the 18th. Moreover, the 15-time major winner stated that back spasms were the reason behind such a bad swing. But Woods plans on healing and working out more.

“I’m going to be rusty and I have to do a better job at home prepping. We need to do a better job with lifting and treating and continuation of rehab protocols, all those things.”

Thus, it is to see if Woods can bring back the competitive edge that he had while teeing it up for the first time at Riviera. The Friday round is a second chance for the golfer and if he makes the best of it, he can definitely make a comeback.
