Roger Federer has arguably transcended tennis and impacted various kinds of people across the world. Indian film star Shah Rukh Khan is one of them. Khan once revealed he borrowed some elements of his work ethic from Roger Federer. The Swiss icon’s philosophy has contributed to the legendary actor now owning a sports empire worth over a billion dollars.

Shah Rukh Khan is one of the biggest movie superstars in the world, commanding legions of fans across the globe. A 2006 report claimed that 3.2 billion people in the world knew who he was, compared to only 2.7 billion for Tom Cruise (Economic Times). More recently, he won the 2023 TIME100 poll, beating other megastars like Lionel Messi, Beyonce, and Mark Zuckerberg. Readers voted for the person they believed was most deserving of featuring on Time’s annual list of 100 most influential people. Hence, winner ‘SRK’ did feature in the 2023 edition.

Back in 2008, Khan spoke to the media about his foray into sports business. He had just purchased a franchise in the then newly-founded Indian Premier League (IPL), the leading cricket tournament in the country. He explained the three pillars that drove his work ethic, saying he aims for success without letting minor hiccups hamper him. Khan said he looks up to Roger Federer and Amitabh Bachchan, the biggest Indian actor of the 1970-80s (Hindustan Times).

“My life has three simple tenets – work hard, don’t think bad about others, and be honest to yourself. The point is, don’t be caught up in small things, go for success. If you are a player, be like Roger Federer, and if you are an actor be like Amitabh Bachchan.”

His franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders, is the third-most successful team in the IPL. The tournament itself has become the second-most valuable sports league in the world, estimated to be worth $10.9 billion, despite being only a two-month event (ET). Khan’s franchise has a brand value of $78.6 million.

The IPL’s success has seen similar cricket leagues sprout in other countries, and investors followed. Khan, too, owns the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in International League T20, and the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. Like his inspiration Federer, Khan’s shrewd business decisions have seen the Knight Riders sports empire grow to a valuation of $1.1 billion (DNA).

Roger Federer fan Shah Rukh Khan congratulated him for 2017 Australian Open win

Shah Rukh Khan is largely popular in the USA as well. Certain reports claimed he was to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in a Martin Scorsese-produced action flick. While that never materialised, he has shot for many Bollywood projects in the USA, developing a sizeable fanbase. He has been called the Roger Federer of Indian cinema by some (News18), drawing parallels between their gentleman image, constant ambition to do better, and global fan following.

Evidently, ‘King Khan’ as he is popularly known, is a big fan of Roger Federer. When the Swiss legend defeated eternal rival Rafael Nadal in five gruelling sets to win the 2017 Australian Open, Shah Rukh Khan took to Twitter to congratulate him. He called the ATP legend an inspiration, also hailing his opponent.

Backed by his Knight Riders empire, and a host of other investments and endorsements, Shah Rukh Khan’s net worth is a whopping $770 million (Forbes). Not only does this figure outdo his inspiration Federer, who is worth around $550 million, it also makes him the fourth-richest actor in the world. Only Jerry Seinfeld, Tyler Perry, and Dwayne Johnson lead him. Khan leaves behind the likes of Tom Cruise, Jackie Chan, and George Clooney.

The long-standing discussion over improved payouts for ATP players had almost taken an ugly turn in January 2018, and its repercussions had a huge impact on Novak Djokovic. Djokovic reportedly appealed to over 150 players to go on strike, a movement that some stars like Roger Federer opposed.

Djokovic, then president of the ATP Player Council, chaired a meeting with around 150 top players and the administrators of the sport. Held just days before the 2018 Australian Open, it failed to reach an amicable conclusion. The officials were asked to leave the room early for some players-only talks.

Speaking to his contemporaries, Novak Djokovic reportedly called for a boycott of the 2019 Australian Open and the formation of a rebel association. As per The Guardian, the Serb wished to increase the overall prize money offered to players. However, he also wanted to end the tradition of Grand Slams offering equal prize money to men and women. Andy Murray strongly opposed this.

Roger Federer agreed with Djokovic’s motion that prize money needs to be increased, especially for lower-ranked players. However, he was staunchly against extreme steps like a strike or directly pointing fingers at the administrators. Speaking to The Guardian, one official labelled Djokovic ‘mad’, saying talk of boycott is nonsense.

“He’s mad if he thinks this is going to succeed. It makes no sense.”

The main concern of these players was that professionals below a certain ranking, usually those outside the top 100-120, do not make sufficient money. Novak Djokovic wished to address that with an overall increased prize pool. He would ultimately establish the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) a couple of years later. Making tennis accessible and profitable for lower-ranked players is one of the main directives of the new organisation. Another issue the PTPA wishes to address is how the ATP manages both players and tournaments. They want to become a player-only body to remove this conflict of interest.

However, men’s tennis activity still comes under the ATP’s purview. The PTPA does not yet have a directly influential or controlling power. However, Djokovic and his team played an important role in the introduction of the ATP’s Baseline program. The World No.1 has been relentless in his efforts to get more money into players’ pockets.

Federer, and Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, have firmly been on ATP’s side, also slamming Djokovic for creating the PTPA. This has led many fans to accuse the duo of being the association’s mouthpieces and not doing much to help their fellow players. They have advocated improved, and even equal, pay but have not been as vocal and proactive as Novak Djokovic.

Amazon Prime Video confirmed a Roger Federer documentary covering the last 12 days before he retired from the sport back in September 2022. The production will be helmed by multiple award-winning director Asif Kapadia.

Now, fans can get an insider view of the final days of Federer’s career. Amazon has onboarded renowned director Kapadia to oversee the project. He is known for his biopics, which have received rave reviews and many awards. The British filmmaker most famously directed documentaries of Ayrton Senna, Amy Winehouse, and Diego Maradona. Amy won the 2016 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. Senna, meanwhile, bagged multiple BAFTA awards.

Kapadia also served as the executive producer for Ronaldo, the much-acclaimed biographical documentary on Cristiano Ronaldo. He also directed a couple of episodes of the hit Netflix show, Mindhunter.

With the untitled Roger Federer documentary, Kapadia will be returning to the director’s chair after two years. The production will feature interviews with Federer’s biggest rivals-turned-friends, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. More interestingly, his wife Mirka, who usually shies away from the media, will also be seen talking about her husband. The exact release date will be revealed soon as reports state a July release is on the cards, around Wimbledon.

Federer retired from professional tennis in September 2022. He had not played on the ATP Tour since the 2021 Wimbledon. However, he returned to the court one last time during the Laver Cup, a competition managed by his agency Team8. He bid adieu to the sport amid a teary farewell.

The Roger Federer documentary was supposed to be only a private home video

In their official announcement, Prime Video revealed that a commercial biopic on Federer was not the original plan. The Swiss icon wanted the days building up to his retirement to be documented for his personal use. He said it was only for the viewing of his family and close friends. He got Joe Sabia, creator of Vogue’s 73 Questions, to film the footage ahead of the 2022 Laver Cup. The former World No.1 said he agreed to it despite being camera-shy because it was not intended for public release (Variety).

“Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends. During my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public.”

However, when Roger Federer and his team saw the acquired videos, they felt it could be something bigger than a home movie. Amazon acquired the rights and got Asif Kapadia on board with Sabia serving as co-director. Federer was thrilled that the documentary covering the final days of his career was getting a global release.

“However, we captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey. I am happy to be partnering with Prime Video because of their vast global reach and significant presence in the film industry. This ensures that the story of my final days in tennis will resonate with both tennis enthusiasts and broader audiences worldwide.”

Tennis is one of the highest-paying sports in the world. A tennis star at the top of his game is guaranteed to make multi-million dollars. The high prize money and the interest from the brand markets can result in more money than many other sports. With real estate investments on the rise in the Middle East, Dubai has recently become a home for many tennis stars such as the great Roger Federer, as they enjoy the beauty of the country and take a break from their busy schedule.

Many global icons like Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Michael Schumacher have already brought properties in Dubai. Even many tennis stars have brought a house in Dubai, where they usually spend some time off with their families.

Roger Federer paved the way for tennis to grow in Dubai

Roger Federer has a dreamy penthouse in Dubai. The Swiss maestro likes to spend a couple of months each year in Dubai, as an escape from the cold in Switzerland. Hence, Roger Federer spent around $23.5 million to buy himself a house in the capital of UAE. The spectacular penthouse has a view of the Dubai Marina. The house is spread over 567 sqm in a luxurious tower called Le Reve with a helicopter available for hire.

It is no surprise that Roger Federer is the most successful tennis player of all-time in Dubai, winning the DDFC ATP 500 title a record 8 times. Federer also featured in a special Burj Al Arab match with Andre Agassi at the top of the iconic building in 2005.

Paula Badosa doesn’t mind not living in Monte Carlo with Stefanos Tsitsipas

Paula Badosa has been living in Dubai for more than a year. Badosa often posts pictures with her boyfriend, Stefanos Tsitsipas when the couple are vacationing in Dubai. Recently, Badosa admitted that she loves living in Dubai and hailed it as one of the best cities in the world. She even went on to call it her ‘second home’.

“I’ve been living here in Dubai this past year. I love this city, it’s one of my favorite cities in the whole world. I chose this city because it’s one of the best. I feel amazing here.”

Sania Mirza, another Grand Slam champion with a Dubai house like Roger Federer

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has been living in the posh area of Palm Jumeirah in Dubai for over ten years. Her luxurious house in Dubai includes a vintage wall piece, lavish living rooms and state of the art architecture. The former Indian tennis player used to live her with her ex-husband Shoaib Malik. Mirza has opted for a vintage, royal look for her house.

Boris Becker has a history with Dubai too

Tennis legend Boris Becker has worked a lot towards investing since his retirement. The German has invested a lot into properties which also includes Dubai. Becker has a commercial real estate project in Dubai under his name. Boris Becker endorses a 19-storey building at the heart of Dubai, having also been a part of a popular fashion show in the city in the early 2000s.

Svetlana Kuznetsova, another Russian who prefers Dubai

Svetlana Kuznetsova is one of the most famous tennis players from Russia. The Russian star made a lot of money throughout her career. In 2023, her net worth was estimated to be around $30 million USD.

Kuznetsova won the US Open and French Open titles once each during her career and turned out as one of the most marketable women’s athlete at the time. The Russian married Vladimir Solodovnik and duo have many properties across the world. Svetlana Kuznetsova has bought houses in Dubai, Russia and the United States. The couple like to spend their holidays at their home in Middle East.

Jannik Sinner lifted the Rotterdam Open title right after winning the 2024 Australian Open, his first Grand Slam. This is a feat that even Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal did not achieve. The Big 3, and more illustrious players, did not triumph in the first tournament they participated in after their maiden Grand Slam victory.

Sinner has elevated his game to elite levels over the last few months. He began his 2024 season with the Australian Open, going on to lift the trophy for his first Majors title. He beat three top 5 players, Andrey Rublev, Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev, in the last three matches of the tournament.

After Melbourne, Jannik Sinner featured in the Rotterdam Open. He played incredible tennis in the ATP 500 event, dropping only one set. He beat Alex de Minaur in the final to clinch the title, the 12th of this career. Apart from a new career-high rank of World No.3, this victory also meant he eclipsed the Big 3 and every other Grand Slam champion since 2001 by achieving a rare record.

Sinner won the first tournament he participated in after securing the maiden Grand Slam title of his career. The last person to achieve this feat was Lleyton Hewitt in 2001. The Aussie won the Japan Open right after bagging his first Majors trophy at the US Open.

Roger Federer and Gaston Gaudio came closest, finishing runner-up in the next event after their first Grand Slam titles. The list of Majors champions since 2001 includes stars like Andy Roddick, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and more. Each one of them has failed to do well in the next tournament after winning their first Grand Slam trophy.

Sinner broke the streak by winning the 2024 Rotterdam Open, outdoing these legendary names. This bodes very well for the Italian, who is tipped to match, if not surpass, these icons and establish a solid legacy.

Roger Federer’s favorite holiday destination is not a European country, as some may have expected. The Swiss icon once revealed that his go-to spot for a relaxing vacation is the Asian archipelago of Maldives. But he also enjoys spending time in Dubai, UAE, and it takes the cake over Maldives since he also owns a luxurious home there.

Maldives is the smallest Asian country, comprising 26 atolls about 750 kilometres from the continental mainland. With lavish resorts dotting the islands of the sparsely populated nation, it has developed into a popular tourism destination. Many celebrities, including athletes, actors, singers etc., prefer to vacation there. Other than Federer, tennis stars like Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev also frequent Maldives.

In an interview in 2019, Roger Federer’s favorite holiday destination was confirmed by the former World No.1 himself. He said Maldives is his choice because he loves a beach holiday with his family (Robb Report). Federer and wife Mirka have visited the island nation multiple times, staying in the most opulent resorts.

“My favorite destination would have to be the Maldives. I love a beach vacation with my family, where at the end of the day, I can have a beautiful quiet dinner with my wife or a wonderful time with friends.”

Federer also revealed he loved mountain vacations. Hailing from Switzerland, he doesn’t need to travel far for that. The Swiss Alps are an iconic mountain holiday destination.

Roger Federer favorite holiday destination where he owns a lavish penthouse

The 20-time Grand Slam winner also has another favourite in Asia. Roger Federer has a close connection with Dubai in the UAE, even purchasing a home there. He has won the Dubai Tennis Championships a record seven times, a very valid reason for his affection for the city. In the same interview with Robb Report, he revealed that The Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai is his favourite hotel.

Federer used to stay in the ultra-luxury hotel frequently, but he also decided to purchase his place in the Middle Eastern tax haven. While he primarily resides in a lavish three-storey mansion in Wollerau, Switzerland, he shelled out about $23.5 million for a posh penthouse in Dubai in 2014.

The five-bedroom penthouse in Dubai’s exclusive Le Reve skyscraper is filled with luxurious fittings and amenities. As per the Architectural Digest, Federer can summon a helicopter to the building’s helipad with a press of a button. The Swiss star spoke about his choice to purchase a house in the Emirati city.

“But I had a good time practising, it was peace and quiet, and I kind of enjoyed it here. I was like, You know, I think this works well for practice and leisure. The next thing I knew, I had an apartment.”

The 6,100-square-foot penthouse is situated at the top of a 50-storey tower, offering exquisite shoreline views of Roger Federer’s favourite holiday destination. It comes with an 870-square-foot private terrace. The entire house has an in-built smart system that enables the resident to control the lighting, temperature, and multimedia from any room, for any room. Federer can also utilise the temperature-controlled rooftop pool and a cutting-edge fitness centre.

Other amenities offered by La Reve include a 24-hour concierge, personal butlers, a chauffeur-driven limousine, a bookable Ferrari, and a personalised security team for its most exclusive residents. Formula 1 legend Fernando Alonso also lives in the same building.

Although Roger Federer will not be playing in the Dubai Open 2024, he is an 8-time champion there in men’s singles, which is a record that still exists and is unlikely to be broken in the future. The Dubai Open 2024 venue is a 30-40 minutes drive from Federer’s house.

It is no secret that Roger Federer is one of the most brilliant entrepreneurial minds in tennis. The retired superstar once made over $9 million simply by playing a few exhibition matches in one off-season week.

Federer’s 2019 season ended when he fell to a semi-final loss in the ATP Finals. Switzerland had also failed to qualify for the Davis Cup Finals, hence the 20-time Grand Slam champion had free time on his hands.

Roger Federer undertook an exhibition tour to South America, with fellow 2019 ATP Finals semi-finalist Alexander Zverev. In one week, the duo were scheduled to play five matches in five different countries. Fans in Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador had a golden opportunity to see one of the biggest tennis stars live. While Argentina and Mexico have some top-tier ATP events annually, the other three nations rarely get tour-level tennis action.

The journey began in Chile before moving on to Argentina, where the Swiss icon was to face local legend Juan Martin del Potro. However, the 2009 US Open winner pulled out due to an injury as Zverev stepped in. The pair then travelled to Bogota, Colombia. The match, however, was called off due to a government curfew at the last minute.

Their subsequent exhibition ties in Mexico and Ecuador went ahead without any hiccups. In Mexico City, 42,517 fans thronged the bullfighting arena, converted to a stadium, to watch Federer beat Zverev. This was a record for the largest attendance at a single tennis match.

Federer’s masterstroke to organise such tours to countries that don’t see a lot of ATP Tour-level tennis paid great dividends for him. As per The Express, he minted £7.7million (over $9.7 million) from his 2019 South America expedition, which was less than a week long. Such great financial ideas have boosted his net worth to over $550 million.

Roger Federer richer by millions because of his popularity in smaller cities, boosted by exhibition events

Federer’s tours and other activities not only filled his coffers but also expanded his fanbase and popularity. Visiting and interacting with fans in cities that do not host any top-level tennis events meant he had a devoted fan following across the globe. In turn, almost like a virtuous cycle, this boosted demand for the Swiss icon in the ATP 250 tournaments held in smaller cities.

Hence, organisers of the lowest-rung ATP events often incentivised Roger Federer with massive appearance fees. His ability to pull crowds, even in the smaller cities, was such that it gave the tournament proprietors confidence they would recoup the payments. Competitions like the Thailand Open, Qatar Open, and Halle Open are some examples. Even certain ATP 500s benefitted from the former World No.1’s presence. He commanded huge fees from tournaments like the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Rotterdam Open as he drew record crowds.

Sources including TennisUpToDate estimate Federer asked for $1.1 million as appearance fees from such competitions. This is a few hundred thousand more than what Big 3 peers Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic charged. Nadal, in a way, also recreated Federer’s South America tour in 2022, with Casper Ruud. While it was also successful, Nadal did not earn as much as what his rival took home in 2019.

Serving is one of the key aspects of a successful tennis player. A big serve can result in many points through aces, as well as setting up a point in a rally. Top tennis stars like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have already admitted that facing big tennis servers can be difficult as they have an extra weapon in their arsenal. Andy Roddick is one of them from the United States.

Over the years, the fans have witnessed some of the best servers in the game. The norm of tall players with big serves dominated the 1990s and early 2000s. Here is a list of five most dangerous servers in tennis.

Andy Roddick leads the list amongst Americans

Rafael Nadal’s latest interview with El Objective de La Sexta is dropping truth bombs that were previously unheard of. He is all over the news for his comment on Roger Federer not being his best friend. It came as a shock to everyone who thought they were pretty close over the years. The Spanish legend was merely expressing his views on the admiration he has for Federer, but they weren’t very close on a personal level.

“I wouldn’t consider him a friend. But someone familiar, with whom I have a great relationship,” said Nadal in that interview about Federer.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have had some endearing rivalries over the years, and some special moments on the court. They also hardly bad-mouthed each other. Therefore, it was easy to assume that the two of them were great friends. However, Nadal cites that their personal lives are different. This news is coming on the back of Novak Djokovic previously stating that he was never close with Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal either.

Both Djokovic and Federer have admitted that they aren’t close friends with each other. And now with Nadal’s confession, it is clear that there’s much more to their lives than what people think generally. Rafael Nadal, who is always known for his humility and discipline on the court, is also more of a complex person. He is not just a friend’s friend but knows to keep his professional boundaries as well as personal ones. Of Nadal’s best friends, fellow Spanish player David Ferrer is one of them.

One player who cracked the code of breaking into each of the Big Three’s friendship circles is Alexander Zverev. Although Zverev is going through some controversies, he spoke about his relationship with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic in an interview in 2019.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Alexander Zverev said

“I have a close relationship with Novak Djokovic, we live in Monaco, we spend time together, but I am even closer to Roger Federer. We are friends. He often talks to me, especially after tough losses. he gives me advice, he doesn’t do it for everybody.”

In a different interview, Zverev added –

“About Rafael Nadal, he communicates less with other players, he usually spends time with Spaniards and his team. But I do not want to be misunderstood. He is a very good guy, he is always available when you ask him for something.”

These were Zverev’s cumulative views on the Big Three. But he didn’t end any of the interviews without mentioning that he is more focused on beating the Big Three.

Alexander Zverev considers Rafael Nadal hard to approach and took his friendship with Roger Federer very far

In his interview, although subtle, it was clear that Alexander Zverev meant Rafael Nadal is harder to approach than the other two of the Big Three. However, he didn’t want to say something wrong and quickly explained how nice and gentlemanly Rafael Nadal always is. However, his friendship and possibly idolatry with Roger Federer is a little too strong. Zverev once went to South America with Roger Federer for his exhibition match in 2019.

Zverev has also been a star player for Roger Federer’s European team at the Laver Cup whenever he plays. The Laver Cup was started by Roger Federer and his manager Tony Godsick, who are also looking to take it to the Middle East in the coming years.
