NIL money has been a contentious issue in today’s college football, as it has seen a big shift in interest among young athletes. They are now able to ink substantial contracts and make more money than even NFL rookies. Is that why college athletes are spending more time declaring for the big league? A recent comparison between NFL star Brock Purdy and Peyton Manning’s nephew, Arch Manning, has shown exactly this.

Brock Purdy has been balling ever since he took over as QB for the 49ers and has been leading the NFL MVP race this season. Despite being in his 2nd season, Mr. Irrelevant makes a quarter of what the Longhorns backup QB is valued for. Brock was paid $870,000 for the 2023 season, which is 3 times less than the $3.2 million that Arch earned through NIL money.

Purdy has played in 23 games across 2 of his seasons in the league, starting all 14 this season. He has thrown for over 5000 yards with 42 TDs. On the other hand, Arch Manning spent his first year in Texas as a redshirt QB. He has played in a handful of snaps and completed just 2 passes for 30 yards. However, he has recently been named as the backup QB for the college football playoffs.

Fans Had a Mixed Reaction to Brock Purdy Making Less Than Arch Manning

The 49ers QB was quite irrelevant 18 months ago. Since then, he has led his team to the NFC Championship last season and will be hoping to take them a step further this season. Despite his meteoric rise in the NFL, he is still making considerably less money than 18-year-old Arch Manning. Fans couldn’t believe this income disparity and had a mixed reaction. One of the fans said, “All part of the process of ruining football at the end of the day.”

While another chimed in and said, “I love it. Finally, the NCAA has to pay kids that bring in the money.”

This fan couldn’t believe it: “This is insane.”

Another fan stated, “His last name tells a story, a big story. Nobody knew Purdy 18 months ago.”

This fan didn’t hesitate before giving a reality check. He wrote, “If Purdy was eligible to go back to college right now he still wouldn’t get 3.2 million in NIL money

If Purdy was eligible to go back to college right now he still wouldn’t get 3.2 million in NIL money

— RizzoTheRatSports (@RizzoTheRat21) December 21, 2023

Several fans feel that with NIL, young athletes are prioritizing money over sport and education. A few even noted that these are college athletes and shouldn’t be paid at all.

As NIL money is not paid by or through universities, it has led to the creation of ‘collectives’. These collectives raise millions of dollars to essentially recruit the top high school talent to specific universities, giving them an unfair advantage. Currently, no NCAA regulation forces the schools to hand over their NIL data to anyone. So this lack of transparency usually hurts college athletes in determining their own NIL worth, as per Villanova Sports Law.

Nevertheless, it’s no secret that Arch Manning is going to rule the spotlight for a long time. But the Manning name comes with some expectations and scrutiny. While his college career is off to a good start, Texas fans will hope that their highly-rated prospect plays more next year. The Longhorns clash with the Washington Huskies in the college playoffs in the Sugar Bowl next month.

Purdy and San Francisco became the first team to qualify for the playoffs. The 3 game-losing run between weeks 6 and 8 has been long forgotten. They are now 11-3 and have already clinched the NFC West division title. They are the NFC top seed and take on the AFC top seed of the Baltimore Ravens in a repeat of the 2013 Super Bowl.

Michael Jordan spent three years at the University of North Carolina playing as a Tar Heel, from 1981 to 1984, before entering the NBA draft as a top pick. Blessed with quality teammates, such as Kenny Smith and James Worthy, the aspiring hooper worked hard day in and day out to be the best player on the team. Worthy once revealed how the two used to constantly talk smack to each other to push their limits. After his three-year stint in college, Jordan played 15 years in the National Basketball Association and earned a whopping total of $90,000,000 in salaries. MJ was once asked which one of the two stints he enjoyed the most, to which he had a rather shocking response.

Jordan’s Tar Heels are known for their prominent ‘one-and-done’ practice for top prospects today. However, if his head coach in college, Dean Smith hadn’t stepped in, MJ would’ve stayed on for yet another year, spending all four years in college. However, Smith believed that the young man had no more basketball to learn at UNC. He was already prepared to be one of the best players in the NBA, in just his rookie season. Here is what Jordan said on the matter, during his interview with Marvin R. Shanken in 2005:

It was Coach [Dean] Smith’s call. I relied so much on his knowledge…Coach Smith felt that it would be the best opportunity for me to make it in professional basketball.”

Michael Jordan opens up on why he enjoyed playing basketball at UNC the most

During the same interview with Marvin R. Shanken, Michael Jordan was asked where he enjoyed playing the most, college or the NBA. To this, most fans would probably expect Jordan to name the league, given how much money he earned and the success he achieved. However, despite winning just one NCAA title in his three years there, MJ declared UNC as his clear favorite. Here is what he said.

“By the time I got to Chicago, I was drafted three, so everybody knew I was at least decent. But at North Carolina, when they recruited me and asked me to attend the university, it was an opportunity to prove myself. Up to that point, everybody had heard that this kid is pretty good, but we don’t know how good. He came from a small town. He wasn’t preseason All-American.

‘He wasn’t in the Top 100 High School kids. He didn’t attend AAU games, and he was not a ranked player in the nation’. The University of North Carolina really gave me the foundation that it took to become a basketball player… That was by far the purest experience for me, and the most satisfying.”

Admittedly, it does make sense why Jordan prefers his time at UNC, rather than the NBA. Given the many controversies that he had to face in his professional career, and the constant, exhausting media attention he got, the more basketball-focused, peaceful environment at college does seem like heaven. It’s likely he viewed it that way.

Jordan’s most iconic moment as a UNC Tar Heel

Michael Jordan had a myriad of highs during his time at North Carolina. However, the one that was undoubtedly the most famous was his shot to win the game against Georgetown in the National Championship Final in 1982. Take a look at the magnificent shot in the YouTube clip by March Madness below.

This was the shot that took him from just ‘Mike’, to ‘Michael Jordan’.

Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of NFL star Tua Tagovailoa, is making waves in D1 college football. With fame comes attention, and Taulia recently revealed that he made a tough decision for the sake of his career. He turned down an eye-popping offer of $1,500,000 tampering money from an undisclosed SEC team.

Many expected Taulia to be a middle-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, but the Pristine Bowl MVP surprised everyone by choosing to play one more year in college before entering the 2024 NFL Draft. However, he was not short of tempting options. An SEC school attempted to lure him away from Maryland with an NFL-like deal, but Taulia remained committed to his current path.

Contentment vs. Crazy Money: Tua Tagovailoa’s Insight on College Football Offers

At the Big Ten media day, Tua Tagovailoa shed light on the practice of tampering in college football, which the NCAA deems illegal for various reasons. The Athletic reported Tagovailoa’s comments on the lucrative nature of being a highly sought-after quarterback, referring to it as “crazy money.” However, he made it clear that his perspective on the situation is different from what one might expect.

“It can be eye-opening, but I think for my situation — if I were in a different situation where maybe I didn’t have a brother in the NFL or maybe my parents, it’d be a different situation.”

The quarterback took advice from his brother, as he was offered a massive deal involving the ‘crazy money’ he mentioned. Tua Tagovailoa mentioned that the NFL-like deal worth $1.5 million was exactly the crazy money he had mentioned in the past. While Tua Tagovailoa expressed contentment with his situation in Maryland, the perks of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities continue to draw attention toward the transfer portal trend.

The quarterback tried to explain his situation in a statement talking about his plans. The player stated, “It would be hard for me to go to another place and not be happy but have all the money in the world. (I’d rather) be at a place where maybe I don’t have as much, but I’m happy and I’m here to work.”

The decision to reject such a lucrative offer showcases Taulia’s dedication to his college career. It is also evidence of his determination to make it big in the NFL on his own terms.

The College Sports Wire’s Top 10 Big Ten Quarterbacks for the 2023 Season

According to the initial post-spring power rankings by The College Sports Wire, Kyle McCord has secured the top spot. The ranking stands for the 10 quarterbacks expected to start in the 2023 Big Ten season. The ranking was followed by Drew Allar, Taulia Tagovailoa, and Tanner Mordecai.

In the 2022 season, Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,008 passing yards with a completion rate of 67%. He has recorded 18 passing touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

However, in the upcoming season, the challenge lies in taking his team beyond the semifinals. As the season progresses, the rankings may evolve. However,  for now, the rankings stand tall at the forefront of the quarterback lineup.

Deion Sanders, the former NFL and MLB star, recently talked in detail about his ‘never say never’ mindset on The Pivot podcast. While heavily emphasizing on the need to help young football enthusiasts become good men first, Coach Prime provided his mantra for success which apparently got validation from NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal.

As it turns out, a section of Deion’s inspiring talk was recently shared by the Colorado Buffaloes’ coach himself as an Instagram reel which was then re-shared by Shaquille O’Neal on his Instagram story. In that video, Sanders reflected on how his aim as a coach is much more than just helping young footballers turn pro.

Deion Sanders wants the kids he coaches to become real men & Shaquille O’Neal is in approval

In the particular snippet of the interview shared by Shaq, Deion can be heard saying that he just never thinks about failing at anything. “I am not a failure, I have won everywhere I have gone, all the way back from the shorty. I am a damn winner man, that’s what I do” Deion said. For the unversed, Shaq is someone who has always backed Sanders, so him propagating Sanders’ views doesn’t come as a surprise.

Coming back to the interview, Coach Prime went on to specify that his winning is not based on games, but on life. He stated that he wants the kids he is coaching to be fine young men. “They’d be fathers, not baby daddies. They’d be real men that shows up on time and early. That if they say they gonna do it, they gonna do it,” Sanders stated.

The Colorado coach then claimed that he wants the kids he coaches to raise young women with class and dignity. He wants them to be responsible, to own things. The video ends with Deion stating,”what we are teaching here is much more than football. I always say, send me a boy and I will send you back a man.” Indeed, Coach Prime’s approach as a mentor is what has helped him in gaining such high status among football admirers.

Coach Prime says he didn’t join or leave Jackson State just for money

In the last few months, Sanders has been heavily criticized for leaving Jackson State. While he was drawing around $300,000 annually at Jackson, accepting the head coach’s job at Colorado earned him a mammoth $29.5 million, 5-year deal. His annual salary now is expected to be around $4.5 million. Hence, he was termed a money hungry individual who sacrificed doing the greater good to fetch more cash.

However, Sanders has repeatedly clarified that he didn’t join Jackson state to earn money, and he didn’t leave the facility to get more. He stated during the same podcast that he felt his time at Jackson State was over, so he took the decision to move on and look for new opportunities.

While Coach Prime enjoyed insurmountable success at Jackson State, it would be interesting to see if he can guide the Colorado Buffaloes to a similar path.

NFL and MLB legend Deion Sanders has been struggling with his health in recent times. Having only recently undergone foot surgery, Sanders now finds himself on the operating table yet again. This time, though, it is due to a sudden blood clot in his groin. Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee recently talked about this grave situation and offered his prayers for Coach Prime’s speedy recovery, after Andrew PacMan provided him with latest details regrading Deion’s health.

The Super Bowl and World Series winner has not been at his best when it comes to his health. Sanders recently revealed that he had two blood clots in his body, both of which would require surgery. Needless to say, this sudden emergency surgery is raising concerns among his admirers.

PacMan Jones reveals what he told Sanders on a call

Pat McAfee and Adam “PacMan” Jones talked about Sanders’ surgery on the recent episode of the ‘Pat McAfee Show’. The duo discussed Sanders’ recent health issues, and how his absence would inadvertently affect the Colorado Buffaloes.

Serious news, and we got it because we’re incredibly lucky to have Adam “Pacman” Jones with us every single week. There is news coming out of Colorado about Coach Prime, Deion Sanders and I want to make sure I get this right. A blood clot has been found in his groin and he has like emergency surgery happening tomorrow,” McAfee said.

PacMan seemed to be in agreement with McAfee’s words that the entire football community is backing Sanders to get better soon. Jones then said, “I totally agree man I had a chance to talk to him(Deion) this morning. I said, ‘Man, I hope they don’t have to cut off your d**k’. That’s what I told him. Yeah, I said, ‘Bro, it’ll be bad if they have to cut off your d**k, bro. Just cut the leg off”. As one can expect, McAfee couldn’t stop himself from chuckling after listening to what Adam admitted telling Deion.

Sanders’ health complications came to light when he was coaching at Jackson State. Back in 2021, he was forced to move around in a motorized wheelchair, due to problems arising from a foot surgery. Later, he had another operation wherein a few toes from his left foot were amputated.

Colorado could suffer if Deion Sanders stays away for too long

One of the biggest things that defines the Colorado Buffaloes’ recent past, is their massive drop in performance and reputation. In fact, the program has fallen to the depths of Pac-12, and hiring Sanders was an attempt at renewing and reinvigorating their flailing program. Given Sanders’ reputation, and his ability to make even the worst teams get on top of their rivals, the hopes are high for the Buffaloes.

However, Coach Prime’s health complications will no doubt throw a wrench in the works for the team. If Sanders is away from the program for far too long, the Buffaloes may not be able to script the comeback they were hoping to achieve this season. Will Sanders recover soon enough to help his team get back to the top?

December 2, 2006, the Oklahoma Sooners were up against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big-12 championship game. Stakes were high, tempers were soaring as the anxious crowd waited for the young stars to take the field. While the fans were expecting a nail-biting clash, the Sooners turned the game into a one-sided affair in the very first quarter. In fact, along with Oklahoma’s dominant on-field display, what ended up gaining the most amount of attention was the way the unit, and especially wide receiver Malcolm Kelly, celebrated the victory. As it turns out, their special rap celebration is apparently remembered by NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal even 16 years after it first went viral.

Upon taking a massive 14 point lead in the very first quarter, the Sooners had ensured that the Cornhuskers had to play the chasing game for the rest of the contest. While they did show some fight in the second quarter, in the end, it was all too little too late as Oklahoma won the contest by 21-7, and fans got to see the hidden ‘rap’ talent of budding footballers.

Shaquille O’Neal still remembers Malcolm Kelly’s famous ‘freestyle’

After winning the contest, Oklahoma stars, proudly donning the Big-12 championship hats, surrounded receiver Malcolm Kelly who delivered the most iconic freestyle in Sooners’ history. It went like this, “But we gonna’ get it, cause we gotta finish, Nebraska Cornhuskers man we diminished.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by 247Sports (@247sports)

Reflecting on the freestyle which became a massive part of Oklahoma’s history, former WR coach Kevin Sumlin, as per OUDaily.com, had stated back in 2017, “I think somebody just started beating on a trash can, and the rest is history.” Kevin went on to add that the rap became “bigger thing than he ever thought it would be.”

The video of the rap session was first shared back in 2007 on YouTube and it still keeps getting hits on a regular basis. An Instagram reel showing the iconic celebration, posted by 247Sports, was recently re-shared by Shaquille O’Neal on his account which brought back the memories of the (G)old video.

Malcolm Kelly’s NFL career was cut short due to recurring injuries

Upon achieving great laurels for the Oklahoma Sooners, the 2005 Big-12 All-Freshman was roped in by the Washington Redskins(now Commanders) in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft. The 51st overall pick went on to sign a 4-year $3.36 Million rookie contract with them.

Unfortunately, Malcolm couldn’t really harness his potential at the highest level due to recurring injuries. He was eventually released by the Redskins in 2011 with an injury settlement. However, the star receiver returned to his favorite sport in 2019, but in the form of a coach.

Malcolm started serving as TCU’s wide receivers coach and still continues to ply his trade for them. Wonder how many requests to re-do the freestyle are still sent his way.

As the NCAA championship game tips off between San Diego and the University of Connecticut, all eyes are on the very important game. So much so that the NBA doesn’t have games today. And broadcasters from across the United States are out in full force. This includes our favorite, Charles Barkley.

If you haven’t seen Charles Barkley on Inside the NBA over the last month, don’t worry, he is just fine. He has been actively covering the NCAA tournament and he has given us plenty to laugh about already.

But tonight, it is more about the big game and chuck decided to show up in a suit and a touch of color. To show his support for the San Diego Aztecs, Charles showed up wearing a big red hat. Go Aztecs!

Charles Barkley’s hilariously huge hat makes it clear he is rooting for the San Diego Aztecs.

Charles always roots for the underdogs and when he does he does so with pomp and flair. The Phoenix Suns legend has cut his teeth in broadcasting for over two decades and we can tell he knows how to work up a crowd.

He says, he is going for the underdogs tonight and the crowd erupts. We think Kawhi Leonard, who is a San Diego alum will be happy about it.

They have had a fairy tale run but will Charles Barkley’s support act as voodoo for the Aztecs?

Charles Barkley has been legendary on air

Absolutely, each time Barkley takes to air we find ourselves laughing at something or the other. Whether it is his candid response on any matter or his rather silly takes, he has it all.

What’s more, he has an eerie habit of making the most callous blunders when it comes to phrases and idioms. Will Charles make another one tonight? Stay tuned to this space.

March Madness is about to come to an end, and just like always, it has presented us with some incredible gems. We saw quite a few upsets and under dog stories. However, no story shone brighter than the one of Caitlin Clark.

The 6ft 2″ guard from Iowa has had one of the most incredible March Madness runs. She’s averaging 27.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.6 assists this season, pulling off huge performance after the other to will her team deep into the NCAA Tournament.

She was recently awarded the Naismith National Player of the Year, as well as the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. Clark also won the USBWA National Player of the Year honors. On top of all that, Caitlin Clark is drawing comparisons to the likes of Stephen Curry. Both of them had incredible March Madness runs, but Clark has a chance to do something Steph couldn’t. With the win tonight, she led her team to their first-ever NCAA Championship Round.

Skip Bayless praises Caitlin Clark after back-to-back 40-point performances

Caitlin Clark pulled off something magnificent tonight. Taking on the defending champions South Carolina, the #2 seeded Iowa put up a big challenge. It was a battle between the point guard at the half. Clark had 19 points, as compared to SCal’s Zia Cooke, who had 18. Iowa led 38-37 at the half.

In the second half, Caitlin took over, as she completed the game with 41 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.

This was the 2nd consecutive 40-point performance by Clark. She had dropped a 40-point triple-double against Louisville in the Elite 8. Her performance tonight booked Iowa a Championship Game against the #3 seeded LSU.

Seeing her performance, Skip Bayless couldn’t help but praise the 21-year-old.

Facing the #1 seed in the Final Four, Clark was true to herself, and didn’t let the pressure get to her. The best example of this is her defense on Raven Johnson.

After the game, she talked about her team, and the confidence she has in them.

NBA Twitter give their flowers to Clark

Watching Caitlin will her team to the NCAA Championship round, the fans sitting at home couldn’t help but praise the 6ft 2″ guard.

We can’t wait to see what Caitlin has in store for us in the Championship game!

Michael Jordan is without a doubt one of the greatest basketball players to ever grace the hardwood. Not a lot would argue about him being the GOAT in the NBA. However, it doesn’t mean that he was the best college basketball player of all time as well.

ESPN, though, declared he is. In 2020, they organized a 64-person bracket of the best players (men & women) to ever play the game of basketball at the NCAA level.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then, Lew Alcindor) was the #1 seed in it and Jordan was #2, followed by Larry Bird and Magic Johnson at number 3. However, by the end of fan voting, MJ came first, Larry Legend was second and KAJ didn’t even make it to the top-4.

And to this day, the 6x NBA MVP is sour about it.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar claims Michael Jordan wasn’t close to Oscar Robertson as a college player

The sports podcast GOAT, Dan Patrick, had the 6x NBA champ on his show. Dan revealed how angry he himself was when this first came out.

The Dan Patrick Show host then asked Kareem to have his say on the matter.

Michael wasn’t anywhere close to the college player that Oscar was,” Kareem said, talking about how the voters might have had no idea about him or either Robertson as college players, because of which they went with MJ.

It’s a natural reaction from a man who never lost an NCAA game, winning 3 championships in his 3-years with UCLA. Alcindor led his team to an 88-2 record in three years of college basketball, going 30-0 in 1968.

Oscar Robertson, meanwhile, won three scoring titles, college basketball player of the year titles, and All-American in his 3 years with the Cincinnati Bearcats between 1957 and 1960. His 33.8 PPG is still the 3rd best in college basketball history. Surreal.

Michael Jordan’s college career

Jordan had a mind-boggling NBA career that only a handful of players in the game come close to. His college career, though, was not as eventful as Kareem’s. Not even Magic or Bird’s I’d say.

He had probably the most famous shot as a freshman in NCAA Finals in 1982 which won a James Worthy-led UNC team to a championship. But it was Worthy’s final year in the college and after that, no more championships for MJ.

Jordan totaled 1788 points in three years of college. To put that in perspective, Kareem had 2325, Bird had 2850, and Robertson had 2973 points in their careers.

Charles Barkley is one of the most flagrant analysts in the NBA media, who has never shied away from putting forth his opinion on live TV.

However, in his second career which has now spanned over two decades, the $50 million worth former NBA star has never been taken as seriously despite making some great points, be it once in a few months.

We are talking about one such instance where the TNT analyst unexpectedly revealed his “under the table” earnings during his college career, but also told how the NCAA should pay players for what they bring in.

Charles Barkley once called out NCAA for paying college athletes

At least 6 years back, in his appearance on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Chuck talked about his beliefs on NCAA players getting paid so that they could pay for their dates and buy their cars.

The former NBA MVP revealed how he “got money under the table in college” from the agents and advocated for teenagers to get paid.

Chuck said that years before it actually caught fire. In 2022, while they still don’t get a salary, the star athletes in College earn some kind of income.

College athletes are earning money through endorsement deals and commercials

With the ruling by the Supreme court last year, college players were allowed to monetize their names, images, and likeness. That finally gave them the right to get endorsement deals and commercials.

Yet, NCAA is adamant about not paying its players despite earning well over $1 Billion every year just through TV deals.

Having multiple decade-long deals with some big TV Networks, they have around $20 billion deals running. Just the Big Ten, for instance, will make $7 billion across seven years for its deal with FOX, CBS, NBC, and Peacock.

Athletes who make it to the big leagues get their due. But the ones who don’t? People are getting exploited for decades and get nothing in return. Mind-bogglingly unfair. Isn’t it? That too in the “most ideal” democracy in the world.
