The Super Bowl is just days away and if the Chiefs and the 49ers can’t determine the winner in regular time, they will have to resort to overtime. And they would have to do so per the new postseason OT rules implemented after the Chief’s infamous 42-36 overtime victory over the Bills in the 2022 AFC divisional round. Similar to many NFL rules, those governing overtime have evolved over time.

The current rules for postseason OT games differ from those in the regular season. Under the current postseason rule, both teams have an opportunity to possess the ball during overtime of a playoff game. Unlike the regular season, the playoffs OT game cannot end in a tie. Therefore, if the game remains tied even after 2 OTs of 15 minutes, the play will continue until a clear winner emerges, regardless of the number of overtime needed as per NBC Sports.

A mandated two-minute intermission between each overtime period has been initiated, along with three timeouts during each OT period.

In the regular season, the team winning the referee’s toss gains possession of the ball first in overtime. The overtime period consists of a 10-minute segment period that will follow a three-minute intermission, during which each team has the opportunity to possess the ball.

However, if both teams have enjoyed the possession and scored a TD but are still tied, the game will be decided through sudden death, any scoring action- whether it’s a safety, a field goal, or a TD, will determine the winner. If the game remains tied even after the OT period, it is declared a tie.

Some memorable NFL games have been decided in the OT  throughout history. Who can forget the 2001 AFC divisional round game between the Raiders and the Patriots? The Raiders seemed to have secured the win when Charles Woodson stripped a young Tom Brady of the ball, and the ensuing fumble was recovered by the Raiders. However, upon review, the on-field ruling was overturned, declaring it an incomplete pass rather than a recovered fumble. The Patriots capitalized on the opportunity in OT and went on to win the game eventually reaching and winning the SB, marking the beginning of a dynasty as per NFL.

Bills fans fondly remember the 1992 divisional round between the Oilers and the Bills. The Bills mounted a remarkable comeback from a 32-point deficit, taking the lead, and forcing the Oilers to counter. Buffalo ultimately secured a victory in OT, courtesy of a Steve Christie field goal.

Just like there is no uniformity in other college football rules and NFL rules, there is uniformity in their OT rules as the college OT rules differ from the NFL’s OT rules as it allows teams to make a comeback even in OT.

Why Doesn’t the NFL Use College Football Overtime Rules?

College football overtime rules differ from those in the NFL. In college OT, each team has an opportunity to score a touchdown or a field goal, and the team with the most points after both possessions is declared the winner. In case of a tie, both teams receive another chance to score and this process repeats until a clear winner emerges as per Viqtory Sports.

NFL overtime rules also insist upon both teams getting the possession, but unlike college football, NFL regular season OT insists on ending the match as soon as the team with first possession scores a TD. If the scores remain tied at the end of the 10 minutes, a sudden death period is initiated, where the next score wins the game.

In the postseason, teams play 15-minute periods and the play will continue regardless of how many overtime periods are needed to determine a winner. Even if the team that started the first possession scores, the second team will get their chance and the OT will continue until their possession ends.

If the defense scores a touchdown on a play from scrimmage in the NFL (regular season) and college football overtime rules, they win the game. While OT is one of the most exciting parts of the NFL and always ends up nail-biter, fans of the team contesting usually hope that their team settles the match during regulation time.

We don’t know if SB will go to OT or not, however the Super Bowl 58 promises to be a spectacle. The 49ers will be looking to win their first SB since 1994 in what happens to be a repeat of the 2019 edition. The Kansas City Chiefs; however, will be looking to cement their dynasty. The game is on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Bryce Young has been named the 2021 Heisman winner, and college football fans are already complaining, saying Kenny Pickett should have won the award.

The Alabama quarterback becomes the second consecutive player to win the award from perhaps the best school in College Football history. Last year, it was wide receiver DeVonta Smith who won the award after a record breaking year for his position.

Young had some big shoes to fill, following up Mac Jones’ incredible performance last year, but the sophomore showed he could live up to the hype, guiding Alabama to the top spot in the CFP rankings once more. Bryce Young also joins a prestigious list of Alabama Heisman winners. Only three other athletes have won the award from the school: Mark Ingram, Derrick Henry, and DeVonta Smith, making him the first quarterback from Alabama to win the award.

CFB fans argue over Bryce Young winning Heisman over Kenny Pickett

If you look at Young’s stats from this year, it almost seems like a no-brainer that he’d win the Heisman. He threw for 4,322 yards, 43 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. His passing yards ranked fourth in the league and his touchdowns ranked second. He also added three scores on the ground.

Alabama finished the year 12-1 and ranked #1 in the CFP race. Young’s best performance may have been the last game before the playoffs start. Going against the then-number one ranked Georgia, Young faced a tall task of trying to take down the Bulldogs’ top ranked defense.

Young responded beautifully, however. He finished the game 26/44 for 421 yards and three touchdowns to capture the SEC title. He was simply amazing that game. That game probably sealed the Heisman for Young.

However, fans of college football are arguing that Young doesn’t deserve the award, citing Nick Saban’s system, Alabama’s prestige, and Alabama’s elite talent at all positions for their success.

For the year, Kenny Pickett 4,319 yards and 42 touchdowns, ranking just behind Young in both categories. The difference between him and Young was marginal, but the dealbreaker may have been Alabama’s success.

Pittsburgh finished the year 11-2 and 12th in the CFP rankings. Being out of the top four definitely hurt Pickett’s chances, as did the fact that he threw seven interceptions. While that’s still an absurdly low number, when you’re comparing two quarterbacks, the slightest differences can be the biggest factors in ranking one ahead of the other.

Young definitely deserved this award, and now he’ll look to take down the undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats who come in at 13-0. ranked #4 in the CFP semi-finals as Alabama looks to repeat as National Champions.

Yesterday, EA Sports announced they will be bringing back the NCAA football game after a 7 year gap. Needless to say, the internet was excited.

After 7 long years, NCAA Football is finally coming back. The last edition came out in 2014, but the series was discontinued after a group of players raised a class action lawsuit against EA for the unauthorized use of their likenesses.

This time around, EA will be careful to avoid any such problems. The game, which is still in the very early stages of development, will not feature the real name, image or likeness of any player.

The release date is currently unknown, although it is likely we won’t be seeing it until next year.

Regardless, players, teams, and fans didn’t hesitate to take their excitement to social media. Of course, when you deprive a passionate fanbase of something they desire this badly, this type of reaction was expected.

However, the pressure is on now for EA. After a couple years of disappointing Madden games, fans are expecting something better, and the anticipation and expectation for NCAA game couldn’t be any higher.

Last night, Alabama’s DeVonta Smith won the Heisman Trophy comfortably. Every year around this time, people are left wondering who the previous winners are and what the significance of the trophy is.

First of all, something most casual fans never realize is that the award is actually called the Heisman Memorial Trophy. It is awarded each year to the most outstanding player in college football.

In 1935, the Downtown Athletic Club, led by athletic director John Heisman, decided to create a trophy to recognize the best college player east of the Mississippi.

When Heisman died a year later, the award was renamed in his memory and expanded to consider players from anywhere in the country.

The winner is selected by  journalists, previous winners, and more recently, a single vote comes from the fans. This year the Crimson Tide WR won with 447 first place votes and 1,856 to breezing past the runner-up, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

Smith became the first wide receiver to win the award in 29 long years.

The Trophy Itself

The Heisman Trophy is perhaps the most iconic-looking award in amateur sports. The image of the ball carrier in the process of a stiff arm makes for a majestic pose, but many people don’t know the actual origin of the trophy.

The trophy was designed by a sculptor named Frank Eliscu in 1935, when Eliscu was just 20 years old. He asked his former high school classmate Ed Smith to pose for the sculpture.

Smith was actually a leading player for the New York University football team and was selected by the Boston Redskins in the first ever NFL Draft in 1936.

Interestingly, Smith didn’t know he was the model for the Heisman Trophy straight away. It wasn’t until 1982 that Smith realized what he had posed for 47 years earlier.

Smith was tracked down by a filmmaker and in 1985, the Downton Athletic Club presented him with his own Heisman Trophy.
